The Lost Art Of Drawing The Line written by Philip K. Howard and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-06-12 with Social Science categories.

The Lost Art of Drawing the Line will appall and irritate — and entertain — readers every bit as much as Philip Howard’s first book. Why is it that no one can fix the schools? Why do ordinary judgements fill doctors with fear? Why are seesaws disappearing from playgrounds? Why has a wave of selfish people overtaken America? In our effort to protect the individual against unfair decisions, we have created a society where no one’s in charge of anything. Silly lawsuits strike fear in our hearts because judges don’t think they have the authority to dismiss them. Inner-city schools are filthy and mired in a cycle of incompetence because no one has the authority to decide who’s doing the job and who’s not. When no one’s in charge, we all lose our link to the common good. When principals lack authority over schools, of what use are the parents’ views? When no one can judge right and wrong, why not be as selfish as you can be? Philip Howard traces our well-meaning effort to protect individuals through the twentieth century, with the unintended result that we have lost much of our individual freedom. Buttressed with scores of stories that make you want to collar the next self-centered jerk or hapless bureaucrat, The Lost Art of Drawing the Line demonstrates once again that Philip Howard is “trying to drive us all sane.”

Excerpt from The Lost Line: Norvell; A Romance of the Year 2023 If some gentle peace loving folk should ask in genuine alarm, "Why such a book as, 'The Lost Line', at a time when everything seems so favorable? "Denominational lines are breaking down, and religious intolerance is so rapidly disappearing that Catholicism and Protestantism even, are forgetting their ancient feud, and all Christians seem to be getting ready to march under one banner against the common foe." We would answer their question by asking, "would the watchman placed at the divine command on the wall of an ancient city of the Israelites been guiltless, if, when he saw the sword coming, he had failed to sound the warning? "Should that lover of humanity who sees the foundations of a great dam giving way forbear to fly on fleet-footed steed down the valley, where thousands peacefully sleep in the pathway of the on coming flood, to arouse them from slumber crying, 'To the Hills! To the Hills! The dam has broken; the flood is coming! Fly for your lives!!'" Shall we be silent then in the face of impending doom? Be silent while Protestantism through neglect of that truth which gave her birth, and made her great, barters away her birthright? Be silent while a foreign potentate and the hierarchy deliberately plan to make this country Catholic, undermine our free institutions and rob us of our liberty? For valuable data, and for invaluable suggestions and counsel, and for help in various ways, the author of "The Lost Line," is forever indebted to his friend Arthur Lee Taylor, Ph. D. of Columbus, N. In this sweeping history of racial interaction and violence from the post-Civil War to school integration in the 1960s, Lee Durham Stone, Ph.D., reframes the "idea of Kentucky." Through this searing lens, Dr. Stone shows how the institutional violence of enslavery rippled through each subsequent era in the Bluegrass State. Examined herein are a trial and "legal lynching" in 1907, the secretive Possum Hunters of 1914-1916 who terrorized the Western Kentucky coalfields, Jim Crow education, the strange case of a physician who drank poison before entering the courtroom (he died), the examination of small-town spatial segregation, and the local resistance to school integration in 1963. There is more, too, including Black businesses and African Americans in coal mining. This book cites all its sources, so it would be useful for students and other researchers.
