These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Lost Million: Look inside the book: My trouble over the ownership of the piece of land forming a portion of the farm attached to the house, and several other matters which had been neglected owing to my absence in Australia, kept my hands pretty full; nevertheless, I found time one evening to take a taxi up to Highgate Cemetery in order to see that the grave of my dead friend had been properly closed and put in order. ...The lawns, gardens, and park were looking their best in those balmy days of June; yet as I walked about, listening to Tucker as he showed me some improvements in tree-planting and in the green-houses, I found myself already reflecting whether, after all, it was worth while keeping the place up further, now that I scarcely ever visited it. About William Le Queux, the Author: He was also a diplomat (honorary consul for San Marino), a traveller (in Europe, the Balkans and North Africa), a flying buff who officiated at the first British air meeting at Doncaster in 1909, and a wireless pioneer who broadcast music from his own station long before radio was generally available; his claims regarding his own abilities and exploits, however, were usually exaggerated. ...Le Queux mainly wrote in the genres of mystery, thriller, and espionage, particularly in the years leading up to World War I, when his partnership with British publishing magnate Lord Northcliffe led to the serialised publication and intensive publicising (including actors dressed as German soldiers walking along Regent Street) of pulp-fiction spy stories and invasion literature such as The Invasion of 1910, The Poisoned Bullet, and Spies of the Kaiser.

Excerpt from The Lost Million Sim! It's it's in my kit-bag, over there! The thing the Thing at which the whole world will stand aghast! The thin white-faced, grey-bearded man lying on his back in bed roused himself with difficulty, and with skinny finger pointed at his strong but battered old leather bag lying in the corner of the small hotel bedroom. A hundred years ago when I went to school, 'The ransom of Red Chief' was REQUIRED (gag me with a spoon!) reading. I was an avid reading convert from then on. This book is full of great stories (Tobin's Palm, The Gift Of The Magi, A Cosmopolite In A Caf, Between Rounds, The Skylight Room, A Service Of Love, The Coming-Out Of Maggie, Man About Town, The Cop And The Anthem, An Adjustment Of Nature, Memoirs Of A Yellow Dog, The Love-Philtre Of Ikey Schoenstein, Mammon And The Archer, Springtime La Carte, The Green Door, From The Cabby's Seat, An Unfinished Story, The Caliph, Cupid And The Clock, Sisters Of The Golden Circle, The Romance Of A Busy Broker, After Twenty Years, Lost On Dress Parade, By Courier, The Furnished Room, The Brief D but Of Tildy) and neat phrases ('He was the kind of guy that if he saw a dollar in another man's hand, he would take it as a personal insult, if he couldn't get it any other way.' 'He was as busy as a one armed paper hanger with the nettle rash.') Do yourself a favor. Allow the Grand Master of the Short Story to fill your empty hours with pure delight. Enjoy this classic work. These few paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside: 'By the two signs, ' answers Tobin, trying to explain, 'which ye display according to the reading of the Egyptian palmist from the sole of me hand, ye've been nominated to offset with good luck the lines of trouble leading to the nigger man and the blonde lady with her feet crossed in the boat, besides the financial loss of a dollar sixty-five, all so far fulfilled according to Hoyle.' ...And that's what I'm doing, ' says I, 'for, in my opinion, there's no fortune to be read from the palm of me hand that wasn't printed there with the handle of a pick. ...I invoke your consideration of the scene-the marble-topped tables, the range of leather-upholstered wall seats, the gay company, the ladies dressed in demi-state toilets, speaking in an exquisite visible chorus of taste, economy, opulence or art; the sedulous and largess-loving gar ons, the music wisely catering to all with its raids upon the composers; the m lange of talk and laughter-and, if you will, the W rzburger in the tall glass cones that bend to your lips as a ripe cherry sways on its branch to the beak of a robber jay. ...In a poem he has to say that there is pride and rivalry between the cities of the earth, and that 'the men that breed from them, they traffic up and down, but cling to their cities' hem as a child to the mother's gown.' ...Why, I've seen Kentuckians who hated whiskey, Virginians who weren't descended from Pocahontas, Indianians who hadn't written a novel, Mexicans who didn't wear velvet trousers with silver dollars sewed along the seams, funny Englishmen, spendthrift Yankees, cold-blooded Southerners, narrow-minded Westerners, and New Yorkers who were too busy to stop for an hour on the street to watch a one-armed grocer's clerk do up cranberries in paper bags.

Excerpt from The Burnt Million, Vol. 1 of 2 His future, so far as he concerns himself with such a matter, is assured to him. If he has to live on his principal, which would, however, seem to him a very monstrous notion, much as the idea of living by theft would seem to the intelligent and doubtless honest reader, he could still live all the rest of his life in great prosperity, or, as he himself would have expressed it, like a fighting cock. It is indeed the vast amount of money he has made, strange as it may seem, which troubles him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Lost World The Original Classic Edition written by Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir and has been published by Tebbo this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06 with Fiction categories.

Fans of the Sherlock Holmes series may be as surprised by the complete change of style that this novel represents for its author. Gone are the formulas, the formal language, the stilted dialogue, and the gamesmanship between author and reader that characterize the Holmes novels, however delightful and successful those may be as mysteries. Instead, we see Doyle letting his imagination run free in a sci-fi romp that is both fun and funny, and often thoughtful. Written in 1912, during an eight-year hiatus from his Sherlock Holmes novels, and six years after his last historical novel, The Lost World is the first of five works involving temperamental Professor Edward Challenger, a scientist investigating evolution and related subjects. Challenger is a scientific outcast, vilified for his most recent paper, in which he claimed to have seen dinosaurs and pre-historic creatures in a remote area of South America, but which he refuses to locate on a map. Blaming the press for much of the controversy over his research, he despises reporters, and regularly assaults them. Young Ed Malone, a reporter looking for more excitement than he is getting on his regular beat, manages to make a connection with Challenger, after passing a test of his mettle. Along with two other scientists, Elizabeth Summerlee and Lord John Roxton, they travel with Challenger to the mysterious plateau in Brazil where he claims to have seen extraordinary beasts believed dead for millions of years. Malones newspaper, which partially funded the expedition, expects him to send daily reports of his adventures by messenger back to civilization. These form much of the novels narrative. The place where Challenger has made his discoveries, which the other scientists are soon able to verify, is at the base of a high plateau in the jungle which has protected it from intrusion by man. This self-contained universe has protected creatures that have become extinct elsewhere. The scientists often death-defying thrills--with canoes going over falls, shooting by headhunters, vengeance taken by one of the guides for past crimes, a war to the death between two separate, but related, species on the evolutionary tree, attacks by pre-historic creatures, and even a love story--make this novel non-stop fun to read. Far more relaxed in style and more imaginative in content than the novels for which Doyle is now (justifiably) famous, The Lost World, written almost a hundred years ago, builds on our universal spirit of adventure and our never-ending fascination with dinosaurs and their behavior.
