Kate Spencer lost her mom to cancer when she was 27. In The Dead Moms Club, she walks readers through her experience of stumbling through grief and loss, and helps them to get through it, too. This isn't a weepy, sentimental story, but rather a frank, up-front look at what it means to go through gruesome grief and come out on the other side. An empathetic read, The Dead Moms Club covers how losing her mother changed nearly everything in her life: both men and women readers who have lost parents or experienced grief of this magnitude will be comforted and consoled. Spencer even concludes each chapter with a cheeky but useful tip for readers (like the "It's None of Your Business Card" to copy and hand out to nosy strangers asking about your passed loved one).

Based on true conversations with real women, The Secret Mothers' Club is a funny, irreverent and often heartbreaking look at women, friendships and motherhood. One evening in late June a group of female friends get together for an old-school sleepover. It is a regular reunion for eight very different women, with very different lives, secrets and fantasies. The only unifying factor? They are all mothers. Be warned, you will recognise yourself and your friends within these pages - theirs are conversations we've all had: about our weight; our fantasies - sexual and otherwise; those school lunchboxes; mother's guilt; our partners; the endless struggle to balance work, housework, family and sanity; and the seemingly impossible task of deciding what to feed the family every single night of the week. This is a book about the delicate nature of mothering, the beauty and complexity of friendships, and the way in which women judge, but also support, one another.

My mother had just turned ten in mid-1933 when a young woman approached her as they were both leaving Mass at St Joan of Arc's in Brighton...The woman was an artist and she would like to paint her portrait... After her mother's death in 2005, Anne Summers inherits a portrait of her mother as a child. Mesmerised by this image, she finds herself drawn into the story of how the portrait was painted and eventually found its way into her family. She soon learns the artist painted another portrait of her mother; this time as the Madonna. In a gripping narrative that is part art history, part detective story and part meditation on the relations between mothers and daughters, Anne's search for the Madonna painting and the mysterious Russian migr collector who bought both paintings takes her down unexpected paths. Her search soon turns into a parallel quest to rescue Constance Stokes, the artist, from obscurity, and to learn why the collector suddenly abandoned the paintings. Along the way Anne finds she must face the truth of the relationship she had with her mother. In turn hypnotic and moving, The Lost Mother is a powerful exploration of art, loss and love.

Abandoned by his wife, a man tries to protect his family during the Great Depression, in this “powerful” novel by the bestselling author of Songs in Ordinary Time (Publishers Weekly). During the Great Depression, rural Vermont suffers along with the rest of the country, and Henry Talcott, with only occasional work as a butcher, is reduced to moving into a tent on the edge of Black Pond with his two children. Their beautiful but unreliable mother has left them, and Henry is devastated by her desertion. He hasn’t told Thomas or Margaret why she left—or if she will return. Told from twelve-year-old Thomas’s perspective, The Lost Mother follows this shattered family as a wealthy neighbor begins to woo the children as companions for her strange, housebound son, and Henry weighs an unexpected proposition, the consequences of which may cost him everything. “A perfectly lovely story about perfectly awful things” by the New York Times–bestselling and National Book Award–nominated author of A Dangerous Woman and Light from a Distant Star, The Lost Mother is “the quietest, subtlest novel that has ever kept [its readers] up into the small hours of the night, unable to look away” (The Washington Post).

All those things no one ever tells you about motherhood. It's like secret mothers' business. Lots of my friends had babies before me, but not one of them ever told me it would be this hard. It's like a code of silence. The Mothers' Group tells the story of six very different women who agree to regularly meet soon after the births of their babies. Set during the first crucial year of their babies' lives, The Mothers' Group tracks the women's individual journeys - and the group's collective one - as they navigate birth and motherhood as well as the shifting ground of their relationships with their partners. Each woman strives in her own way to become the mother she wants to be, and finds herself becoming increasingly reliant on the friendship and support of the members of the mothers' group. Until one day an unthinkably shocking event changes everything, testing their bonds and revealing closely-held secrets that threaten to shatter their lives.

Excerpt from Studies in Child Development: A Manual for Mothers and Mother's Clubs During the past twelve years, in connection with the work of Mother's Child Study clubs, I have spoken many times to audiences composed of mothers. Among the things which have impressed me most strongly in this work is the fact that there are hundreds of mothers, especially young mothers, who appreciate the importance of securing a broader knowledge of their children, but do not know where to look for it. They know in a general way that experiments and investigations are being made along the line of child study and that books are being written upon the subject, but this material is slow in making its way into the public libraries and even there it is often not in a form as to be really available. Perhaps the first question asked when a mothers' club has been organized is, "What book shall we use as a basis for our study?" For a number of years I searched for such a book but failed to find it. Most of the volumes on child study contain valuable material, but either present it in too technical a form for the average mother, or present too much of the theoretical and too little of the practical to adapt the work to everyday conditions. At last I determined to prepare a book which should contain such material as seemed to be most needed and most often called for, a book which should answer the questions that have been asked me most frequently by mothers.
