You might think: Why have I called this personal history "The Luckiest Boy in Germany"? Because all my life I have had one lucky break after another. I was born in 1928, on the eve of the Great Depression and so not a good year, but for me it was a very good year: I missed the First World War and as the Second World War finished in 1945, I was too young to fight. In 1938, during the Kristallnacht, our Modesalon on the Kurfurstendamm in Berlin was destroyed, and my mother fled to England. I was the youngest in the family, and my mother took me with her, while my brother Erik was left behind and ended up in a Nazi "Zwangsarbeitslager." Sadly, all my mother's relatives left in Germany died in Nazi concentration camps. In England my luck continued. At first I lived with Mr & Mrs Clamp and they treated me as if I were their own child. English became my first language; in 1940 I went to Ashby Boys' Grammar School. In 1942 I moved to London. I wanted to study medicine and applied to do 1st MB at Chelsea Polytechnic and was only offered a place on their pre-1stMB course, not what I wanted. When on the first day I had my interview with one of the tutors and he saw my School Certificate results he said: 'I see from your exam results that in the Pre-1st MB course you would be repeating what you have already done at school, so I am transferring you to the 1st MB course.' In June 1945 I passed this exam.. I applied to all the London medical schools, but didn't get a place; University College London put me on their reserve list. As I didn't hear anything I started a degree course at Chelsea Polytechnic. Then I had a letter from UCL offering me a place after all. God! I was pleased! I qualified in July 1950 when I was still 21. By this time, I felt English and wanted to live in England, so I became a British citizen. In 1948 the Labour government introduced the National Health Service in which I was lucky to work for the next 40 years. I wanted to work at University College Hospital (UCH), my Alma Mater, but had no luck. I had almost given up hope of getting a job there when I was appointed House Physician at the new UCH outpost at St Pancras Hospital. After I finished this job I was called up and posted to Mauritius. While there I did my first piece of research: "Filariasis in Mauritius" published in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine. After the army I wanted to work at UCH and do research, but at first had no luck. Three years later, in 1956, I was appointed Resident Clinical Pathologist. While there I began my study of the abnormal haemoglobins and the assembly of the haemoglobin molecule. In 1958, I got the research support I needed: first a Junior Beit Memorial Fellowship, then a Fourth Year Beit and finally a Senior Beit; I worked in Biochemistry at UCL and then in the Medical Unit at UCH. In between I spent a year in America on a Rockefeller Travelling Fellowship. When I came back to England I got a MD and PhD, was elected FRCP and Fellow of University College; after that I moved up the academic/NHS ladder at University College Hospital Medical School. For this to happen you have to have a mentor and I was lucky to have the support of two: Professor Lord Rosenheim, Max, Director of the Medical Unit at UCHMS and President of the Royal College of Physicians and Professor Prankerd, Tom, the first Professor of Haematology at UCHMS, who in 1964 made me part of his MRC Group at UCHMS as a Senior Lecturer/Consultant enabling me in 1980 to succeed him as Professor of Haematology. Last, but not least, I was also extremely lucky in my personal life: First in having such a caring and supportive mother. Then, in 1958 I had by far the greatest bit of luck of my life: I met, fell in love with and married Yvonne, who not only loved me but encouraged me in my endeavours for the rest of my life. All the things I was able to do and enjoy during the last fifty years, I could not have done without her."

Part I considers Corden's early life, from a young boy growing up in Nazi Germany, to his immigration from England to Australia and what that means for the author's self-identity. Part II addresses Corden's work on the Australian Protection Policy for which he is perhaps best known, before reflecting upon the author's time at Oxford University and the Australian National University, and, finally, moving on to review contributions made at the IMF, Johns Hopkins University, and The World Bank. This book will be of interest to all aspiring economists, as well as established economists familiar with Corden's work. It is an inspiring and profound record of the intellectual journey made by one of Australia's best known economists.

In October 1945, a one-year-old boy was abandoned in a freight car at a railroad station in a small Hungarian town. The events of this book are based on the life of the author, who was that abandoned baby, and the life of the loving family who adopted him. He was Such a Lucky Boy. The child grew up during the turbulent years of post World War II Hungary. The Communist ideology changed everyone's life, especially religious Jews. Laszlo Kadar's life was complicated by the philosophy of his religious father, which was in direct opposition to the philosophy of his Communist teachers. They promised the good life and a great future without religion. Following World War II, the Soviet Union was the liberator of Hungary and forced communism on the Hungarian people, whose lives were made miserable. This is the true story of the plight and hardship of one orthodox Jewish family living in a provincial city in Hungary.

In Munich in 1920, just after the end of the First World War, German officers who had been prisoners of war in England published a book they had written and smuggled back to Germany. Through vivid text and illustrations they describe in detail their experience of life in captivity in a camp at Skipton in Yorkshire. Their work, now translated into English for the first time, gives us a unique insight into their feelings about the war, their captors and their longing to go home. In their own words they record the conditions, the daily routines, the food, their relationship with the prison authorities, their activities and entertainment, and their thoughts of their homeland. The challenges and privations they faced are part of their story, as is the community they created within the confines of the camp. The whole gamut of their existence is portrayed here, in particular through their drawings and cartoons which are reproduced alongside the translation. German Prisoners of the Great War offers us a direct inside of view a hitherto neglected aspect of the wartime experience a century ago.

Love is necessarily an important element in all imaginative literature, but with Gottfried Keller it does not overshadow all other aspects of life. Great passion we do not find in his works. In "A Village Romeo and Juliet", it is not ill-consuming love that makes the two young people seek death, but the bitter realization of life's law, as they understood it, which made it impossible for them ever to be united. The story is a fine illustration of what a great artist may make out of his raw material. Keller had read in a newspaper a report of the suicide of two young people, the sort of tragedy that we may read almost daily in newspapers; he seized upon the possibilities of the situation and the result was this story, perhaps the best he ever wrote. --- Gottfried Keller (1819-1890) was one of the foremost Swiss novelists and one of the most original figures of German literature since Goethe, a master of style worthy to be classed with the great names of all ages. “A gritty, unsentimental story of love and loyalty played out across Europe during the two World Wars . . . Fans of Graham Greene or Alan Furst will want to take a look.” —Publishers Weekly This riveting novel introduces us to Kate Zweig, the beautiful English widow of a German surgeon, and Claus Murphy, an exiled American with German roots—two lovers with complicated loyalties. In 1918, Kate and her husband were taken for spies by Russian soldiers and forced to flee their field hospital on the eastern front, barely escaping with their lives. Years later, in London during the Nazis’ V-1 reign of terror, Claus spends his days making propaganda films, and his nights as a British spy worn down by the war and his own numerous secrets. When Claus meets Kate, he finds himself drawn to her, even after evidence surfaces that she might not be exactly who she seems. As the war hurtles to a violent end, Claus must decide where his own loyalties lie, whether he can make a difference in the war, and what might be gained by taking a leap of faith with Kate. The interwoven strands of Paul Griner’s plot offer up “[an] unsentimental and realistic look at the fallout of war”—both physical and emotional (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). Louisville’s Courier-Journal called The German Woman “Griner’s masterpiece” and praised the novelist as someone “who can take you absolutely anywhere, never wastes a sentence, and, most impressive of all, understands the beating heart of a woman.”
