The most vital and significant moments in life are moments of encounter. Whether we encounter ourselves, others, or God, these moments let us know that life is meaningful. And presence is what makes encounter possible. When we are truly present, everything that has being becomes potentially present to us. In this unique resource, David Benner invites us to live with more presence so we can know the presence of God more deeply in our lives. Drawing on over thirty-five years of experience integrating psychology and spirituality, Benner examines the transformational possibilities of spiritual presence and encounter in fresh, exciting, and practical ways. He helps readers understand the personal and interpersonal dimensions of presence and encounter, revealing how they mediate Divine Presence and serve as sacraments of everyday life. His rich meditations are presented in a voice that is intelligent, compassionate, and engaging. The book includes end-of-chapter reflection exercises for individual or group use and a foreword by Richard Rohr.

The Physics of Encounter suggests explanations for paranormal phenomena. It describes the hidden force that generates consciousness and enables our mind to influence physical events. The proposed conceptual model shows that mind and matter are two sides of the same coin and introduces new interpretations of pivotal concepts into the public debate about science and religion. Written for readers of all backgrounds, the book illuminates the controversial views regarding the nature of our universe. Could our minds be imbedded in a field of cosmic consciousness? Was our universe created "from nothing" or is it a pulsating reality, expanding and collapsing? The book examines the issue of consciousness in the light of recently developed theories of vacum fluctuations and oscillating strings. It describes how "entanglements" with a hidden force give rise to such baffling phenomena as Near-Death-Experiences, UFOs, and backward causation. Last not least the book examines fears that have recently resurfaced in the media: could our entire earth be pulled into a black hole? Could the simulation of a big bang in an immensely powerful particle accelerator, like the one at the atomic research lab CERN near Geneva, create such a fateful event? As you read this, the earth is still circling around the sun. The book provides a framework for a rational discussion of fascinating and by no means trivial phenomena.

China’s role in the history of world animation has been trivialized or largely forgotten. In Animated Encounters Daisy Yan Du addresses this omission in her study of Chinese animation and its engagement with international forces during its formative period, the 1940s–1970s. She introduces readers to transnational movements in early Chinese animation, tracing the involvement of Japanese, Soviet, American, Taiwanese, and China’s ethnic minorities, at socio-historical or representational levels, in animated filmmaking in China. Du argues that Chinese animation was international almost from its inception and that such border-crossing exchanges helped make it “Chinese” and subsequently transform the history of world animation. She highlights animated encounters and entanglements to provide an alternative to current studies of the subject characterized by a preoccupation with essentialist ideas of “Chineseness” and further questions the long-held belief that the forty-year-period in question was a time of cultural isolationism for China due to constant wars and revolutions. China’s socialist era, known for the pervasiveness of its political propaganda and suppression of the arts, unexpectedly witnessed a golden age of animation. Socialist collectivism, reinforced by totalitarian politics and centralized state control, allowed Chinese animation to prosper and flourish artistically. In addition, the double marginality of animation—a minor art form for children—coupled with its disarming qualities and intrinsic malleability and mobility, granted animators and producers the double power to play with politics and transgress ideological and geographical borders while surviving censorship, both at home and abroad. A captivating and enlightening history, Animated Encounters will attract scholars and students of world film and animation studies, children’s culture, and modern Chinese history.

Encounters Of Mind written by Douglas L. Berger and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-23 with Philosophy categories.

Discusses the journey of Buddhist ideas on awareness and personhood from India to China. Encounters of Mind explores a crucial step in the philosophical journey of Buddhism from India to China, and what influence this step, once taken, had on Chinese thought in a broader scope. The relationship of concepts of mind, or awareness, to the constitution of personhood in Chinese traditions of reflection was to change profoundly after the Cognition School of Buddhism made its way to China during the sixth century. India’s Buddhist philosophers had formulated the idea that, in order for human beings to achieve perfect enlightenment, they had to produce a state of awareness through practice that they described as “luminous.” However, once introduced to the Chinese tradition, the concept of the “luminous mind” was to become a condition already found within human nature for the possibility of achieving human ideals. This notion of the luminous mind was to have far-reaching significance both for Chinese Buddhism and for medieval Confucianism. Douglas L. Berger follows the transforming path of conceptions of the luminosity of consciousness and the perfectibility of personhood in order to bring into clearer relief the history of Indian and Chinese philosophical dialogue, as well as in the hope that such dialogue will be reignited.

Luminous Dark written by Alain Emerson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-23 with Religion categories.

Alain Emerson felt like the luckiest man in the world. A talented young pastor of a thriving church and national director of a prayer movement, he had found and married Lyndsay, the girl of his dreams, his soul mate. He could never have imagined that, in a matter of months, he would be nursing his beautiful twenty-three-year-old bride through the final stages of cancer, and that at the age of only twenty-seven he would find himself a widower, distraught and alone. The faith that had once seemed firm and secure began to crumble. And then there were the questions. Hadn't he been faithful and obedient? Why had God not answered his prayers? Why was God silent now? Why? Alain realized that in order for his faith to survive, he needed to face God, not hold Him at arm's length. Like Jacob, he had to wrestle, and like Job, he had to voice his pain and disappointment. He had to lean into the pain. In this profound exploration of loss, Emerson walks through the stages of grief and the shock of choosing to face God with his disappointment. He experiences the bewildering silence of God, the absence of simple answers, and the dark tunnel of despair. Taking great comfort from the Psalms and the work of writers who truly understand grief--Elie Wiesel, Walter Brueggemann, Jrgen Moltmann--Emerson wrestles with God and with his sorrow, and emerges with a deeper understanding and knowledge of God, a stronger and deeper faith, and a sense of having seen His face.

Human Dignity Education And Political Society written by James Greenaway and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-07 with Education categories.

A life of liberty and responsibility does not just happen, but requires a particular kind of education, one that aims at both a growth of the human soul and an enrichment of political society in justice and the common good. This we call a liberal education. Forgetfulness of liberty is also a forgetfulness of the multi-dimensional nature of the human person, and a diminution of political life. Keeping in mind what can be lost when liberal education is lost, this volume makes the case for recovering what is perennially noble and good in the liberal arts, and why the liberal arts always have a role to play in human flourishing. Each of the authors herein focuses on the connection of three primary themes: human dignity, liberal education, and political society. Intentionally rooted in the hub that joins the three themes, each author seeks to unfold the contemporary significance of that hub. As a whole, the volume explores how the three themes are crucial to each other: how they illuminate each other, how they need each other, and how the loss of one jeopardizes the wellbeing of the others. In individual chapters, the authors engage various relevant aspects of liberal education. As a result, the volume is organized into three parts: Liberal Education and a Life Well Lived; Thinkers on Dignity and Education in History; Contemporary Topics in Dignity and Education. As education is increasingly channeled into an ever more narrow focus on technical specialization, and measured against professional success, students themselves face a maelstrom of campus politics and competing political orthodoxies. These are among the issues that tend to militate against the operative liberty of the student to think and to speak as a person. This edited collection is offered as an invitation to think again about the liberal arts in order to recover the meaning of education as the authentic pursuit of the good life or eudemonia.
