Excerpt from The Lyric and Dramatic Poems of John Milton The purpose of this book is to provide a new approach to Milton, by giving for the first time in one volume the text of all of Milton's English lyric and dramatic poems, annotated for school or college use. To the minor poems (including Comus) so frequently edited, I have added Samson Agonistes, in the belief that an introduction to the study of Milton may more appropriately lead through the lyric and dramatic poems than through the minor poems and selections from Paradise Lost. The sublimity of Milton, as revealed in the great epic, is not readily felt by a young student, who may, however, gain from Miltons tragedy a sense of the poets greatness, as distinguished from those qualities which the minor poems so amply illustrate. The first edition of the minor poems appeared in 1645, and was reprinted in 1673. Comus appeared independently in 1637; Lycidas in 1638, in a volume of memorial verse by several hands; and Samson Agonistes in 1671, in a volume with Paradise Regained. These editions, together with the Cambridge Ms., which is chiefly in Milton's own hand, are the authorities for any text. Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume IV features all the verse written in the English language by English poet JOHN MILTON (1608-1674), including the essential Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, plus "Song on May Morning," "Sonnet to the Nightingale," "The Passion," "To a Virtuous Young Lady," and others.

Excerpt from Comus Few poems have been more variously designated than Comus, Milton himself describes it simply as "A Mask"; by others it has been criticised and estimated as a lyrical drama, a drama in the epic style, a lyric poem in the form of a play, a phantasy, an allegory, a philosophical poem, a suite of speeches or majestic soliloquies, and even a didactic poem. Such variety in the description of the poem is explained partly by its complex charm and many-sided interest, and partly by the desire to describe it from that point of view which should best reconcile its literary form with what we know of the genius and powers of its author. Those who, like Dr. Johnson, have blamed it as a drama, have admired it "as a series of lines," or as a lyric; one writer, who has found that its characters are nothing, its sentiments tedious, its story uninteresting, has nevertheless "doubted whether there will ever be any similar poem which gives so true a conception of the capacity and the dignity of the mind by which it was produced" (Bagehot's Literary Studies). Some who have praised it as an allegory see in it a satire on the evils both of the Church and of the State, while others regard it as alluding to the vices of the Court alone. Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works of John Milton WE are aided in the study of Milton's life by the sharpness of line which separates the three main epochs of his history: his life of student ease, during which he was preparing himself with consecration for his poetic vocation; his life of public service, when he put behind him his poetic ambitions and threw himself with fanatical ardor into the struggle for liberty; and his old age, when, blind and discredited, he sat down amid the wreck of everything for which he had given his best twenty years, to write the poem which from early youth he had felt it his mis sion to leave to the nation. Milton's youth was singularly sweet and Sheltered. He was born in London on the 9th of December, 1608, the son of John Milton, a scrivener or solicitor do ing business at the Sign of the Spread Eagle in Bread Street. It is worth noting that for two generations at least the Miltons had exhibited intense partisanship in the religious disputes which agitated the nation. Richard Milton, the poet's grand father, had been a stubborn Catholic recusant under Elizabeth, and John Milton, the poet's father, had broken with his family in order to join the Puritans. The Puri tanism of the home in Bread Street was not, however, of an ascetic or unlovely type. The father was an accomplished musician, of some note as a composer, and could even on occasion try his hand at poetry. This mellow atmosphere of taste and cultivation, spiritualized by a sincere piety, united with larger circumstances to enrich life for the young poet. We must remember that in Milton's childhood Shakespeare was still alive, that at the Mermaid Tavern, probably in the very street where the scrivener's house stood, Ben Jonson held his merry meetings, and that most of the stalwart figures which had made the reign of the Virgin Queen illustrious were still to be seen about the streets of London. There was as yet hardly a hint of the passing away of those spacious times, of the spirit of romance and adventure, which had filled Elizabethan England. His nature, there fore, was in no danger of being starved at the outset, as it must have been if his birth had fallen a few decades farther on in the struggle between the old and the new, when Puritanism had narrowed and hardened itself in order to project itself more forcibly against its enemies. Excerpt from The Poems of John Milton, Vol. 1 of 2: With Notes Brevity and terseness are the very soul of annotation a note should not contain a superfluous word Nature not having bestowed on me copiousness of language, my style is brief and condensed, hence I rarely copy the notes of others, as I can express their matter in fewer words. In reality however the greater part of these notes was written from the resources of my own mind, and it was, in general, only in dubious cases that I referred to the commentators. But whenever I have been indebted to any of them, I have given his name so also in the parallel passages, though I had my self noticed the greater number of them, I give the initials of the critics who first observed them. With respect to these passages, nothing surely can be further from my mind than the idea of making Milton a centoist; but I think it a most agreeable employment for a philosophic mind to trace how far a great poet may have been indebted for ideas or language to the authors he had read, and I quote no others. For a. Similar reason I have given the various readings to Comus and other poems from Milton's own manuscript. Excerpt from The Complete Poems of John Milton, Vol. 4: With Introduction and Notes Of his prose writings. There are three species of liberty, he says, which are essential to the happiness of social life - religious, domestic, and civil, and for all three he fought. His most important prose works may, indeed, be roughly classed under these heads: under religious, his pamphlets against Episcopacy; under domestic, his works on Education, Divorce, and the Freedom of the Press; under civil, his controversial writings on the overthrow of the monarchy. In all of these he strove for freedom and toleration; and when England became a Republic, he became oficially associated with the new government as Secretary of Foreign Tongues, in which capacity he not only conducted its foreign correspondence, but also acted as its literary adviser and champion in the controversies by pam phlet that arose in connection with the execution of the King and the theory of the Commonwealth. It was in the midst of these activities that a great calamity overtook him. The defence of the late King had been undertaken by the famous Dutch Latinist Salmasius in a Defensio Regis, and to Milton fell the task of replying to it. His eyesight, wealt ened even in childhood by overstudy, was now failing fast, and he was warned by physicians that it would go altogether if he persisted in this work. But to Milton the fight he had entered on was no mere matter of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
