The author, in defining the genre of "lyrical fiction," separates a type of .fiction that can be legitimately viewed as “poetry” from other narrative types. The lyrical novelist uses fictional devices to find an aesthetic expression for experience, achieving an effect most frequently seen in dreams, picaresques, and allegories. Analyzing representative novels by Hermann Hesse, Andre Gide, and Virginia Woolf, Ralph Freedman focuses on the problem of self-consciousness. His findings are directly applicable to much twentieth-century fiction. Originally published in 1963. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Author of six novels, Christopher John Koch (born in 1932) is one of Australia's leading novelists who enjoys worldwide recognition. Koch's writing has its finger on the pulse of today's changing society. Not only does his work fall within a universal stream but it also stands out as a production of its own, built like a puzzle with distinct pieces. Through fiction, Koch explores other genres - the fairy tale, drama, poetry - to the point of producing multi-faceted works which challenge classification. In spite of the constant renewal of his settings for action, one notices the presence of a main thread which runs through Koch's fiction: the antipodean and ambiguous relationship between illusion and reality. This theoretically-informed monograph provides a book-by-book analysis of the novelist's ouvre and gives a full picture of his Weltanschauung. It is valuable reference for scholars in Australian Studies, as well as those researching postcolonial, psychoanalytic and literary theories.

Chinese Theories Of Fiction written by Ming Dong Gu and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-06-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

In this innovative work, Ming Dong Gu examines Chinese literature and traditional Chinese criticism to construct a distinctly Chinese theory of fiction and places it within the context of international fiction theory. He argues that because Chinese fiction, or xiaoshuo, was produced in a tradition very different from that of the West, it has formed a system of fiction theory that cannot be adequately accounted for by Western fiction theory grounded in mimesis and realism. Through an inquiry into the macrocosm of Chinese fiction, the art of formative works, and theoretical data in fiction commentaries and intellectual thought, Gu explores the conceptual and historical conditions of Chinese fiction in relation to European and world fiction. In the process, Gu critiques and challenges some accepted views of Chinese fiction and provides a theoretical basis for fresh approaches to fiction study in general and Chinese fiction in particular. Such masterpieces as the Jin Ping Mei (The Plum in the Golden Vase) and the Hongloumeng (The Story of the Stone) are discussed at length to advance his notion of fiction and fiction theory.

This volume contains an examination of what are described as the most poetic examples of Chilean prose written in the 20th century. By adopting Ralph Freedman's conceptual definition of lyrical narrative and using it as her point of departure, Professor Kostopolos-Cooperman argues that the protean and magical nature of Bombal's lyrical prose transcends the causal, temporal and spatial movement that characterizes conventional fiction. In her view, Bombal's work is rather a narrative that arises in the poetic imagination of a narrator who creates a tapestry of expanding musical and pictorial patterns frequently reflecting the inner lives of her protagonists - alienated heroines who withdraw into an illusory world of dreams, fantasies and idealized realities where the conflict between self and other is rendered through a suggestive and contemplative network of subjective associations.
