The Mad Sailor of the North Atlantic first wrote poetry and wrote songs, a short story came into the mix in college for a creative writing class, and somewhere along the line he began writing vignettes. This book opens with the vignettes, subtly wrought pictures in words tracing the Mad Sailors journey from there to here. I had always intended for my music to be a part of this book, but you will have to settle for finding my music on Face Book, Reverb Nation, and Sound Cloud. I have left breadcrumbs to follow if you would like a copy of my CD. I have always wanted to be a writer, and for almost fifty years I have been writing the book you now hold in your hands. Some of these moments were brutal, breaking me and reassembling me, forcing me to places I never imagined existed as I looked at the trail early in my traveling. Most of the things I found were a wonder, and I have done the best I could to hand you the seeds that grew the bridges the Mad Sailor learned to cross. I have grown up with this book, and casting it upon the waters of the high lonesome wind is a hard thing. We sail our seven seas, solitary and all at once joined, letting the currents and winds do what they do. Thank you for taking a chance on the Mad Sailor and the winds that brought him home.

HMAS Sydney was the pride of the fleet during the Second World War. A light cruiser and one of Australia’s main combat vessels. On the 19th November 1941, off the coast of Western Australia, The Sydney engaged in a fierce and bloody battle with the German raider Kormoran. Following this action, The Sydney failed to return to port. An extensive search and rescue carried out, but the warship had disappeared with all 645 men on board. Whilst the battle lasted little more than an hour, this single ship engagement remains Australia’s greatest naval disaster. More Australian servicemen died in the battle between the German raider Kormoran and the light cruiser HMAS Sydney than perished in the Vietnam War. It was not until 2008 that the wreck was discovered. The passage of time between the sinking and the discovery led to numerous mystery and conspiracy theories, all of which started replacing the truth. Now, with an explanation of how those on board lived, fought, and died, this book tells the full story.

This is the unbelievable true story of a woman who not only overcame so many obstacles and tragedies in her life but also used them to grow in faith that later proved to make her stronger in her belief in God. She definitely had so many adventures to talk about that she had to try to put them all in a book so people could read about her real-life stories and understand that her life, as complex as it is, made her the woman of faith that she is today. She wrote this book to reveal the adversities women had to come up against in the military, even in the 1980s, when it should have been accepted long before that. They still do a good job of covering up the sexual harassment and discrimination women have to endure today, but hopefully this book will bring some of it to light. She was battling not only an atmosphere of male superiority but also the demons within her own life with the disease of alcoholism. People who read this book will hopefully be able to relate to some or maybe most of it, and maybe if we just have a tiny bit of belief to ask God for an open mind and the willingness to be willing, we can change our lives for the better. Yes, this book proves that we can all change if we leave it in God's hands.

In this book, which reads like a novel, Dirk Baatenburg de Jong, a Dutch Merchant Marine, is involved with a war he never signed up for after the Nazis invaded his native country, The Netherlands. After being part of the Battle of the Atlantic, fighting in the Mediterranean and Pacific Theatres, Dirk settled in the United States where he confronted another, more insidious threat, a corrupt labor union that threatened the life of his family. This is a must read for anyone interested in history, human survival, love, and unknown heroes.

Confined in a small space for months on end, subject to ship's discipline and living on limited food supplies, many sailors of old lost their minds – and no wonder. Many still do. The result in some instances was bloodthirsty mutinies, such as the whaleboat Sharon whose captain was butchered and fed to the ship's pigs in a crazed attack in the Pacific. Or mob violence, such as the 147 survivors on the raft of the Medusa, who slaughtered each other in a two-week orgy of violence. So serious was the problem that the Royal Navy's own physician claimed sailors were seven times more likely to go mad than the rest of the population. Historic figures such as Christopher Columbus, George Vancouver, Fletcher Christian (leader of the munity of the Bounty) and Robert FitzRoy (founder of the Met Office) have all had their sanity questioned. More recently, sailors in today's round-the-world races often experience disturbing hallucinations, including seeing elephants floating in the sea and strangers taking the helm, or suffer complete psychological breakdown, like Donald Crowhurst. Others become hypnotised by the sea and jump to their deaths. Off the Deep End looks at the sea's physical character, how it confuses our senses and makes rational thought difficult. It explores the long history of madness at sea and how that is echoed in many of today's yacht races. It looks at the often-marginal behaviour of sailors living both figuratively and literally outside society's usual rules. And it also looks at the sea's power to heal, as well as cause, madness.
