The Mai Affair written by David Henderson and has been published by Royal Institute for International Affairs this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Direkte investeringer categories.

This essay tells the story of a recent failed venture in international economic cooperation —namely, the proposed Multilateral Agreement on Investment, or MAI. The MAI would have embodied a concerted set of measures to push forward the liberalization of foreign direct investment. Negotiations to prepare it were launched in 1995 by the member governments of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the OECD. These negotiations were brought to a close towards the end of 1998, and there is no prospect that they will be renewed. The MAI is now dead. This failure had not at all been expected. It resulted from a combination of internal doubts and hesitations on the part of OECD governments and strong outside opposition brought to bear by non-governmental organizations of various kinds. The MAI became politically non-viable. David Henderson outlines the course of these events, accounts for the breakdown of negotiations, examines the arguments brought to bear, weighs the implications of failure, and suggests the lessons to be drawn. He places this remarkable and disturbing episode in perspective.

The Oecd written by Peter Carroll and has been published by Edward Elgar Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-01 with Business & Economics categories.

The book reveals, for the first time, the origins, growth and complex role of the OECD as it celebrates its fiftieth anniversary, showing how it has adapted for the most part successfully to the changing needs of its members, both large and small. Peter Carroll and Aynsley Kellow provide a comprehensive account and analysis of the origins, development and, most intriguingly, the recent reforms that characterise the OECD. They argue that this increasingly complex organisation has fulfilled its design to be an adaptive, learning organisation and explore how the OECD has spread its wings beyond its European and North American roots to become an increasingly influential body in global governance. Topical chapters include the OECD s work on health and the environment, relations with international, intergovernmental organisations, the OECD s structure and also the key processes. This fascinating book will be warmly welcomed by academics, researchers and postgraduate students in a wide range of fields including international relations, international business, political science, public policy and public administration. Public servants in national departments and agencies particularly those with significant international activities will also find the book to be of great interest, as will professionals within international organisations such as IMF, World Bank, EU, UN and (of course) the OECD itself.

Havens In A Storm written by J. C. Sharman and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-05-16 with Political Science categories.

Small states have learned in recent decades that capital accumulates where taxes are low; as a result, tax havens have increasingly competed for the attention of international investors with tax and regulatory concessions. Economically powerful countries including France, Britain, Japan, and the United States, however, wished to stanch the offshore flow of domestic taxable capital. Since 1998 the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has attempted to impose common tax regulations on more than three dozen small states. In a fascinating book based on fieldwork and interviews in twenty-two countries in the Caribbean, North America, Europe, and islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, J. C. Sharman shows how the struggle was decided in favor of the tax havens, which eventually avoided common regulation. No other book on tax havens is based on such extensive fieldwork, and no other author has had access to so many of the key decision makers who played roles in the conflict between onshore and offshore Sharman suggests that microstates succeeded in their struggle with great powers because of their astute deployment of reputation and effective rhetorical self-positioning. In effect, they persuaded a transnational audience that the OECD was being untrue to its own values by engaging in a hypocritical, bullying exercise inimical to free competition.
