The French School of flute playing, characterized by an emphasis on a wide spectrum of tone colors that were both unique and euphonious, had its genesis in Paris in the 1860's, and it matured during the following decades of the 19th century. One seminal influence was the development of the Boehm-style flute system, which Theobald Boehm first demonstrated in Paris in 1833. The improved sonority was acclaimed by all who heard it, but universal acceptance of the flute was not immediate. One reason for this was that established professional flutists were not willing to take the time needed to learn the new ring-key and rod fingering system that Boehm had devised. In 1847 Boehm introduced a revision with a cylindrical bore as opposed to the original conical bore. In 1855 Boehm began the production of silver flutes for the first time and, by the 1860's, most flutists were playing on the new flute. The 1860's also saw the rise to prominence of the great flute virtuoso Paul Taffanel. Taffanel played in the orchestra for the Paris Opera and he also was instrumental in establishing various chamber groups with other top musicians in Paris. His recognized virtuosity and great artistry made him influential in most aspects of French musical life; later in his career he taught at the Paris Conservatory and he also became the Principal conductor of the Paris Opera. He came to maturity just after France's defeat to Germany in the Franco-Prussian War (1871). The French cultural focus had turned inward and Taffanel became one of the leaders of the Paris music community. The silver flute allowed Taffanel to play with a much wider range of tone colors and with an unforced brilliance. This was the style that he taught to the next generation of French flutists This paper proposes that it was the confluence of two moments in time that helped to establish the French School of flute playing. The first was the universal acceptance of the Boehm system flute, and the second was the artistry of Paul Taffanel as he played on that flute.

This paper is an attempt to explore why there exists a substantial body of French flute music inspired by Ancient Greece, including pieces commissioned for the annual flute competition (or concours ) of the Paris Conservatoire, occupying a place within a larger body of music composed from the late nineteenth century onwards. On one level this music is linked by a complex web of professional human relationships, and on another by compositional inspiration derived from Ancient Greek mythology, poetry and modes. The majority of the compositions can be positioned in a time and place when for various reasons such inspiration can be viewed as an obvious and natural source. An introductory exploration of these categories with supporting musical illustrations is given context alongside the earliest relevant example from the Conservatoire commissioning process, expanded in reference to investigation suggesting a potential importance attached to the pitch of C#, as first seen in Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune of 1894. The vitally important role of the Paris Conservatoire is explored in its physical sense, as the place where the future best French musicians trained under the expertise of the master performer pedagogues of each era. An alternative institutional perspective considers traditions, relationships, commissions and influences which encouraged the development of the French Flute School and its attendant repertoire. These factors coalesced to form a key strand supporting French musical identity, here presented as an all-important aspect of nationalistic fervour in the years following the Franco-Prussian war. The concept of translatio studii underpins this French sense of cultural superiority, explored over time from the Humanistic Renaissance through to the growth of musical societies, the importance attached to folk song, education of French youth, and the sensibilities of French music itself in the late nineteenth century. All these themes give context to the contemporaneous revival of interest in classical antiquity, its dissemination through French society, and the resultant influence upon both the composers of that period and those to be inspired by it in future. From all these disparate sources arise an ever-growing body of fine French flute music inspired by Ancient Greece.
