Few developments in the industrial era have had a greater impact on everyday social life than the explosion of the mass media and commercial entertainments, and none have exerted a more profound influence on the nature of modern politics. Nowhere in Europe were the tensions and controversies surrounding the rise of mass culture more politically charged than in Germany-debates that played fatefully into the hands of the radical right. Corey Ross provides the first general account of the expansion of the mass media in Germany up to the Second World War, examining how the rise of film, radio, recorded music, popular press, and advertising fitted into the wider development of social, political, and cultural life. Spanning the period from the late nineteenth century to the Third Reich, Media and the Making of Modern Germany shows how the social impact and meaning of 'mass culture' were by no means straightforward or homogenizing, but rather changed under different political and economic circumstances. By locating the rapid expansion of communications media and commercial entertainments firmly within their broader social and political context, Ross sheds new light on the relationship between mass media, social change, and political culture during this tumultuous period in German history.

Excerpt from The Making of Modern Germany: Six Public Lectures Delivered in Chicago in 1915 HE following six lectures were delivered in the year 1915 at the invitation of the University Lecture Association (in cooperation with the University of Chi cago) In preparing them for publication I considered myself free to reshape them, to add, subtract, and fuse, with a view to presenting as close and connected a story of the evolution of modern Germany as was possible under the circumstances. Various features have been added Footnotes, Maps, a Select Bibliography, and a body of eight Appendices of which I entertain the hope that they will be found, each in its own way, to supplement and enhance the text. The modern idea of 'mastery' over nature always had its critics, whether their motives were aesthetic, religious or environmentalist. By investigating how the most fundamental element - water - was 'conquered' by draining fens and marshes, straightening the courses of rivers, building high dams and exploiting hydro-electric power, The Conquest of Nature explores how over the last 250 years, the German people have shaped their natural environment and how the landscapes they created took a powerful hold on the German imagination. From Frederick the Great of Prussia to Johann Gottfried Tulla, 'the man who tamed the wild Rhine' in the nineteenth century to Otto Intze, 'master dambuilder' of the years around 1900, to the Nazis who set out to colonise 'living space' in the East, this groundbreaking study shows that while mastery over nature delivers undoubted benefits, it has often come at a tremendous cost to both the natural environment and human life.

Various features have been added - Footnotes, Maps, a Select Bibliography, and a body of eight Appendices - of which I entertain the hope that they will be found, each in its own way, to supplement and enhance the text. The lecture form has for the historian many disadvantages, but also undeniably one advantage; as such I look upon the necessity of marching onward by a single designated highway in order that the audience may not lose the sense of movement and direction. Among the often painful disadvantages, I am particularly impressed with the obligation of avoiding, in the interest of a smooth and swift journey, many matters which lie off the highway and yet arouse a most legitimate curiosity. It was to meet this drawback that I have added the features spoken of above, more particularly the Appendices, each of which presents some subject having an immediate value and interest for the reader.
