I am Mario Minniti, painter. I write this as I approach age 63. I can hardly believe that I knew Caravaggio. We met in 1593, really as boys. I was scarcely 16 and he, 21, although he lied and said he was 19. To think he was to become the most sought after and revered painter in all of Italy. Yet when I first met him, I knew that he was headed for tragedy. Everyone suspected that Caravaggio's death was mysterious. Some say that he died of fever. I say that he was murdered. For fear of my life for thirty years, I have had to hold my tongue. Now when many are dead, I want to tell what happened, what I know to be true. I do not know who will read this, but I want a record to exist. Syracuse, Sicily, 1640 Taking us on a journey beginning in sixteenth-century Rome and moving through Naples, the wild seaport of Malta, Sicily, and back to Rome, The Man Who Killed Caravaggio is a story filled with mystery, art, love, and betrayal. Oremland breathes life into the little-known painter Mario Minniti to tell the story. Through Minniti, the lifelong friend, one-time model, and early lover of Caravaggio, we encounter the great painter's loves and lovers, rivals, and the influential patrons who protected him from mishap after mishap.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio lived the darkest and most dangerous life of any of the great painters. The worlds of Milan, Rome and Naples through which Caravaggio moved and which Andrew Graham-Dixon describes brilliantly in this book, are those of cardinals and whores, prayer and violence. On the streets surrounding the churches and palaces, brawls and swordfights were regular occurrences. In the course of this desperate life Caravaggio created the most dramatic paintings of his age, using ordinary men and women - often prostitutes and the very poor - to model for his depictions of classic religious scenes. Andrew Graham-Dixon's exceptionally illuminating readings of Caravaggio'spictures, which are the heart of the book, show very clearly how he created their drama, immediacy and humanity, and how completely he departed from the conventions of his time.

"Cast: 6m., 1w., extras if desired. Caravaggio is set in Rome in 1600 when the city was vibrant with artists, powerful religious leaders, the Inquisition and street violence. A famous painter in his lifetime, Caravaggio kills a man in a brawl and finds a bounty on his head put there not only by the dead man's family but by the Vatican itself. Cardinal Del Monte, his protector, secures a commission for Caravaggio on the isolated island of Malta while he works behind the scenes to convince the pope to pardon the painter. Caravaggio paints the portrait of the Grand Master of the Knights, learning that the powerful man has one thing on his mind and that is to save Caravaggio's wretched soul. Tortured, Caravaggio escapes, racing to Naples where he finds refuge with his arch artistic nemesis, the famous Annibale Carracci. What Caravaggio doesn't know is that his competitor, Carracci, suffers from an inability to create. Visited by his lover, Francesco, and his model and lover, Lena, and with his life hanging in the balance, Caravaggio finds in his exile inspiration that makes him create a dynamic change in art. Through his suffering and his search for God, he creates the style of art we now call Baroque. Unit set. Approximate running time: 2 hours."--Publisher's website.

This book is the bearer of horrendous events like the smothering of two children, King Edward V and his brother, in the Tower of London; the incredible story of the impersonators of Henry VII, which led to the deaths of hundreds and the end of one of the impostors by slow hanging. Slow hanging, evisceration, emasculation--all performed as the victims looked on--quartering and beheading, were specialties of the Renaissance. Cesare Borgia assassinated his brother and then his sister's beloved husband Alfonso. Countess Caterina Sforza saw her stable-boy husband's privates cut away and stuffed in his mouth. Pier Luigi Borghese had a rent-boy's throat slit outside his apartments to prevent blackmail. Beatrice Cenci murdered her incestuous father and Caravaggio killed Ranuccio over whores they disputed. Cellini stabbed the man responsible for his brother's death and Corts massacred thousands by the sword, then millions with the smallpox he and his men carried. Henri III butchered thousands more during France's wars of religion. Very few people have ever heard of Astorre Manfredi, said to have been the most beautiful boy in Italy. He lived during these exciting times, home to the likes of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Lorenzo Il Magnifico, Cesare and Lucretia Borgia, all of whom he might have rubbed shoulders with, one of whom murdered him. And Juan Borgia, supreme in his skin-tight trousers, billowing white shirt and black pearl-studded doublet, the garments he was wearing when brought up in a net from the depths of the Tiber. Wars, girls seduced through incest, heretics burned at the stake, bacchanalias unknown since Ancient Rome. Poverty that condemned a generation to an early death--and wealth beyond measure--were part of everyday life during the Renaissance, and are the essence of this book, Renaissance Murders.

The painting of Michelangelo Merisi called Caravaggio (1571-1610) had such a vast influence that, according to modern scholars, it constituted an "epochal turning point" not only in Italian but also European art. This volume recounts the master's life through lights and shadows, masterpieces and scandals, presenting the paintings that scholars have unanimously acknowledged to be autograph works on the basis of documentary evidence that has emerged in recent years. It analyzes his revolutionary painting skills at a technical and creative level, and depicts a remarkably alive and realistic picture of Caravaggio the "man" and his journey: the move from Lombardy to Rome, followed by his dramatic flight to Naples, Malta, Sicily, and back to Naples again, ending with his tragic death. -- From publisher's description.
