The Marginal Productivity Theory of Distribution (MPTD) claims that in a free-market economy the demand for a factor of production will depend upon its marginal product – where "marginal product" is defined as the change in total product that is caused by, or that follows, the addition or subtraction of the marginal unit of the factor used in the production process, with all other inputs held constant. From its inception in the early nineteenth century the MPTD has been claimed by some economists to be a solution to the ethical problem of distributive justice, i.e. to be a means of determining fairness in wages, profits, interest and rent. Other economists have rejected this ethical claim, but have seen the MPTD as a valid demand-side criterion in the determination of equilibrium and efficiency. This book argues that the MPTD is valid, neither as a normative theory of social justice, nor as a positive law of economics. It suggests that economics is yet to develop a satisfactory theory of distribution that is scientific in the quantitative or mathematical sense. Through a survey of the origin and subsequent evolution of the MPTD in the writings of over 50 contributors over 150 years, John Pullen presents a critical history of the concept. The book begins by examining the conceptual tools that have been deployed to facilitate this analysis of past contributions to the MPTD and then looks at various economists and their contribution to the debate including its supporters such as Wicksteed, Marshall, Wicksell and Stigler, and its critics such as Pareto, Hobson, Edgeworth, Adriance and Cassel.

Marginal People in Deviant Places revisits early- to mid-twentieth-century ethnographic studies, arguing that their focus on marginal subcultures—ranging from American hobos, to men who have sex with other men in St. Louis bathrooms, to hippies, to taxi dancers in Chicago, to elderly Jews in Venice, California—helped produce new ways of thinking about social difference more broadly in the United States. Irvine demonstrates how the social scientists who told the stories of these marginalized groups represented an early challenge to then-dominant narratives of scientific racism, prefiguring the academic fields of gender, ethnic, sexuality, and queer studies in key ways. In recounting the social histories of certain American outsiders, Irvine identifies an American paradox by which social differences are both despised and desired, and she describes the rise of an outsider capitalism that integrates difference into American society by marketing it.

Difference-in-Differences (DiD) is a popular method used to evaluate the effect of a treatment. In its most simple version a control group remains untreated at two periods, whereas the treatment group becomes fully treated at the second period. However, it is not uncommon in applications of the method that the treatment rate only increases more in the treatment group. This article presents identification results for the marginal treatment effect (MTE) in such fuzzy designs. We show that we can modify the standard identifying assumptions in DiD designs with covariates to identify the MTE in models with essential heterogeneity. We propose two different procedures for the estimation of the MTE that rely on different assumptions regarding the potential outcomes model and prove their asymptotical normality. Furthermore, we derive a doubly-robust estimator for the local average treatment effect (LATE) which augments the two-way fixed effects regression model with a control function and unit-specific weights that rise from the propensity score. We assert the desirable finite-sample properties through simulation studies of a linear MTE model. Finally, we use our results to investigate heterogeneity on the returns to primary school attendance in Indonesia.
