The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of Indian Muslim women regarding their marital satisfaction and to understand the perceived quality of their relationships. This qualitative study is the first of its kind to consider marital satisfaction among Indian Muslim women. A semi-structured interview questions reflecting the four research questions were formulated to use in face-to-face in-depth interview among the six Indian Muslim women from Mumbai, India. The four research questions were: (i) what is the lived experience of being married for Indian Muslim women? (ii) what is the perceived quality of the relationship and what does marital satisfaction mean to the Indian Muslim women? (iii) what are the factors influencing the marital satisfaction of Indian Muslim women? (iv) what are the resources and support that the Indian married women utilize to enhance their marital satisfaction? The study analyzed the relevant constructed meanings that emerged from all interviews and clustered them into nine main themes with 19 sub-themes in an attempt to reach an in-depth understanding of the lived marital experiences of the Indian Muslim woman. These themes included their expectation of marriage, in-law involvement during marriage, housekeeping: decisions and divisions, perceived foundation of marital happiness, social factors, religious factors, communication, companionship, unconditional acceptance and resources and support that enhance marital satisfaction. The analysis of the collected data in this study provided a rich description of the Indian Muslim woman’s lived marital experiences and an identification of factors that influence their level of marital satisfaction. The conclusions of the study indicate that the Indian Muslim women were satisfied with their marital life with supportive and understanding husband. The Indian Muslim wife’s reported the husbands to be less traditional in terms of gender role in regards to housekeeping. Overall participants reported influence of religious belief leads to greater faithfulness, higher commitment and made it easier for the participants to compromise and forgive their partners in time of conflict and differences and increase faith in their marriage. An analysis of the data collected provided the basis for future research on this phenomenon as well as some implications for couples, the Islamic religious leaders, and marriage counselors working with this population.

This volume occasions a dialogue between major authors in the field who engage in a conversation on cosmopolitanism and provinciality from a communication ethics perspective. There is no consensus on what constitutes communication ethics, cosmopolitanism, or provinciality: the task is more modest and diverse and began with contributors being asked what the bias of their work suggests or offers for understanding the theme Communication Ethics: Between Cosmopolitanism and Provinciality. Rather than responding authoritatively, each essay acknowledges the contributor's own work. This book offers no answers, but invites a conversation that is more akin to a beginning, a joining, an admission that there is more than «me», «us», or «my kind» of people, theory, or wisdom. The book will be an excellent resource for instructors and for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in communication.

Romantic love is often an elusive, fragile, and tenuous state, difficult to maintain across time. The rates of divorce, re-divorce, relationship violence, and abuse today attest to the face we are failing at romantic love. And for teen-aged and adult children of divorce, romantic love can be especially elusive. Because they have no roadmap for a satisfying, stable romatic relationship derived from their own parents, they are confused by what love is and tend to make poor partner choices. Borrowing heavily from popular culture for unrealistic standards regarding love, they become disillusioned when their all-too-ordinary lovers don't measure up. Especially vulnerable to the problems their parents had, they tend to overreact in a similar negative fashion and are all too ready to consider divorce when unhappiness strikes. In attempting to halt intergenerational transmission of divorce, Psychologist Piorkowski points to how we can recognize that American popular culture presents an overly-sexualized, explosive, and superficial version of love that can't last. With this book, adult children of divorce can begin to see how they have been affected by familial experiences, and develop a new, realistic map to find more fulfilling and enduring romantic relastionships. Piorkowski, in an extensive review of literature, also looks at cultural factors and how they impact romantic love and marriage. In contrast to American popular culture's shallow rendition of romantic love, many cultures elsewhere in the world emphasize compatibility, religion, and family allegiance. As a result, says the author, such marriages appear more stable than American unions built upon the shifting sands of emotion.

This is a study of the forces which brought about a change in the status and position of the Muslims of Punjab during the British rule of the province, from 1849, up to its independence in 1947. It examines the role of the government, reformers and political leaders in bringing about a transformation in their position. It is a useful study for understanding the predicament of the modern day South Asian Muslim women, who sometimes emerge in powerful political positions in an otherwise conservative society.

A systematic presentation of the status of women of India throughout the long history of about 6000 years has been presented starting from the Vedic times to the post-independence period. A detailed description of the status of women during the Vedic times, which is rarely available in any of the existing literature, and in the following periods is very significant to the study of this subject. The author has discussed how the political and religious conditions over the periods have affected the conditions of women. The age-old evils, which had got firmly entrenched in the Indian society, such as the tradition of Sati, illiteracy, child marriages, and deplorable treatment of widows and so on, still persist and some new ones have joined the list. These are: bride burning, dowry, female feticide, domestic violence, to name a few. Short biographies of some outstanding women have been included to illustrate that in spite of adversities some women had achieved eminence. To the credit of the Indian Government, legislative measures have been taken to protect and improve the status of women after independence and just prior to it. These have been outlined. Unfortunately, these measures have not been able to achieve their intended results on account of wide spread corruption and lack of education and awareness among women, especially in the rural areas. A snapshot of the present conditions is given along with concluding remarks and recommendations for improvement. Improvement of the status of women is extremely improvement for India if it wishes to become a developed and progressive country and a world leader in culture and ideology.
