Excerpt from The Martyred Towns of France It was characteristic of their brutish stupidity that they recognized no essential difference between the soul of France and the soul of pagan Rome dying the death of Babylon. That there was something in France they could neither kill nor enslave, was beyond their power of comprehension. So they did what they could - never doubting that it would be enough. Today, they themselves are beaten, outcast, despised, staggering under debt, hunger gnawing at their vitals anarchy and terrorism regnant in their model cities, their vaunted efficiency and organization gone with the mailed fist that held them together for its benefit, not theirs. Small Town Martyrs And Murderers written by Edward J. Woell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with History categories.

On March 11, 1793, about a thousand counterrevolutionary rebels converged on the small French town of Machecoul and over the next six weeks killed many of its revolutionary officials and supporters. The massacres at Machecoul marked the beginning of a popular insurgency in western France called the War of Vendee, in turn igniting the ferocious republican response known today as the Terror. This story explores why these small-town massacres occurred, how they may have unfolded, and what the local and national repercussions of the murders were. The author Edward J. Woell argues that more than any other factor, religion stood at the center of the massacres: in their origins during the late Old Regime, in their enactment amid the wider revolutionary tumult, and in their remembrance over the century that followed. Claiming a greater significance to the episode than most historians have acknowledged, Woell shows that the Machecoul massacres not only raise the most fundamental, profound, and perplexing questions that scholars have sought to answer, but they also embody the quintessential themes of the French Revolution.

At the heart of the Haute Vienne region of France, there is a village which lays some 10 kms from Limoges! The name of this village is Oradour sur Glane. On the 10 th of June 1944, this quaint village was the scene of a barbaric massacre, at the hands of the evil Nazi's. Over 150 heavily armed SS soldiers entered this peaceful village, and rounded up 642 men, women, and children. After hearing false reports that they were part of the resistance movement, upon orders, these vile men, systematically murdered these innocent civilians, with few survivors! Before fleeing the scene, they torched the village, in an attempt to erase the atrocities. Under orders of France's General de Gaulle, the remains of the village have been preserved, as a reminder of what happened on that fateful day.

In France in an Era of Global War, scholars re-examine experiences of French politics, occupation, empire and entanglements with the Anglophone world between 1914 and 1945. In doing so, they question the long-standing myths and assumptions which continue to surround this period, and offer new avenues of enquiry.
