Excerpt from The Mature Man's Difficulties With His Bible There was put into the hand of the writer some time since a book intended to show that the Bible was defective in its morality. Passages of the Bible, taken from various parts of it, were cited. Deborah's ode and portions of the Psalms were given which, it was said, breathed a revengeful Spirit. Portions of Deuteronomy and Leviticus were also quoted as belonging to the Hebrew code of laws. And these, it was claimed, were not only obnoxious in statement, but were almost barbarous in their severity. Incidents of personal history were also named as immoral in tone and extremely ob jectionable in language. It was said that some things were unsuited for reading in the family, and that no minister would use them as a Scripture lesson from the pulpit. It was insisted upon that these things ought not to be so much as named in a holy book such as the Bible professes to be. Excerpt from A Young Man's Perils and Bible Difficulties, Containing a Young Man's Safeguard in the Perils of the Age The author, on assuming the pastoral charge of a church in a thrifty and intelligent inland city of New England, found in the community a large number of young men not exactly sceptical, but a good deal unsettled in their views of religion. They were graduates of Grammar and High schools; intelligent young men, who, though employed as clerks or apprentices, found time to read the papers, the magazines, and occasionally a book. They had caught the drift of one section of popular thought. They asked for some book which should meet briefly and yet fairly the difficulties which they felt. There were plenty of scholarly volumes, suited to men who had received a liberal education and who were masters of their own time. But a small, popular, and at the same time accurate volume, suited to this demand, the author could not find. Excerpt from The Modern Man Facing the Old Problems HE author's previous volumes, in the order I of their publication, have been The Bible Verified, The Trend of the Centuries, The Easter Hope, and Biblical Nature Studies. Their themes might be stated as follows God in the Word, God in the world of history, God in the future world, God in the natural world, and now in this new work, The Modern Man Facing the Old Problems, we have God in the world of practical living. The logical succession of topics would put the consider ation of the hereafter at the end, and with such a rearrangement we have a measurably complete line of thought, and one advancing steadily to a climax. But perhaps the most important subject is the last receiving treatment, namely, that of the following pages. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Plain Man and His Bible Of course, many of them are good for nothing, but many of them are valuable. I do not agree with the talk that we hear much of in these days that all modern books are cheap in matter as well as price. Many of our modern books will be living when the authors are dead and gone. But the Bible goes steadily on as the greatest and most popular of books. It is greatest because it treats of the greatest theme. Without the Bible we would have no knowledge of the most important matters that concern the soul. The History of Man's Moral Condition It is in the Bible that we get the history of man's moral condition. From the study of science we can get a history of most of the important matters of life, but while we are doing this we are constantly reminded of the fact that nowhere outside the Bible can we get the history of man's moral condition. Nature gives us no help. The earth itself is silent. The stars above us only confuse us. Everything is dumb in answer to the question "What is man?" Lounsbury James Fenimore Cooper by Mary E. Phillips James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Before embarking on his career as a writer, Cooper served in the U.S. Navy, which greatly influenced many of his novels. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, tale of espionage in Revolutionary War. He also wrote numerous sea stories, and his best-known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans.
