Classification of Finite Simple Groups, one of the most monumental accomplishments of modern mathematics, was announced in 1983 with the proof completed in 2004. Since then, it has opened up a new and powerful strategy to approach and resolve many previously inaccessible problems in group theory, number theory, combinatorics, coding theory, algebraic geometry, and other areas of mathematics. This strategy crucially utilizes various information about finite simple groups, part of which is catalogued in the Atlas of Finite Groups (John H. Conway et al.), and in An Atlas of Brauer Characters (Christoph Jansen et al.). It is impossible to overestimate the roles of the Atlases and the related computer algebra systems in the everyday life of researchers in many areas of contemporary mathematics. The main objective of the conference was to discuss numerous applications of the Atlases and to explore recent developments and future directions of research, with focus on the interaction between computation and theory and applications to number theory and algebraic geometry. The papers in this volume are based on talks given at the conference. They present a comprehensive survey on current research in all of these fields.

With the classification of the finite simple groups complete, much work has gone into the study of maximal subgroups of almost simple groups. In this volume the authors investigate the maximal subgroups of the finite classical groups and present research into these groups as well as proving many new results. In particular, the authors develop a unified treatment of the theory of the 'geometric subgroups' of the classical groups, introduced by Aschbacher, and they answer the questions of maximality and conjugacy and obtain the precise shapes of these groups. Both authors are experts in the field and the book will be of considerable value not only to group theorists, but also to combinatorialists and geometers interested in these techniques and results. Graduate students will find it a very readable introduction to the topic and it will bring them to the very forefront of research in group theory.

Let [italic]V be a finite dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p [greater than] 0 and let G = SL([italic]V), Sp([italic]V), or SO([italic]V). The main result describes all closed, connected, overgroups of [italic]X in SL([italic]V), assuming [italic]X is a closed, connected, irreducible subgroup of G.

In 1999, a conference called International Meeting on Coding Theory and Cryptography took place at Mota Castle in Castilia (Spain). The conference had great acceptance within the community of coding theory and cryptography researchers. At that moment, and also nowadays, there are not many international workshops about these topics, at least if we compare with other mathematical and engineering subjects of research. Therefore, the general desire was to continue with more Castle Meetings. However, the following conference did not take place until 2008. In that case, the conference was called II International Castle Meeting on Coding Theory and Applications allowing more topics related to coding theory apart from cryptography. Such conference took place at Mota Castle again and the number of participants was similar to the previous edition. The present edition of the conference, called III International Castle Meeting on Coding Theory and Applications has been held at Cardona Castle in Catalonia (Spain). The number of communications has increased and a number of selected papers will be published in a special issue of the journal Designs, Codes and Cryptography. As in the previous editions, the conference has been of high level with notorious invited speakers and scientic committee members.

Proceedings Of The Conference On Transformation Groups written by P. S. Mostert and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

These Proceedings contain articles based on the lectures and in formal discussions at the Conference on Transformation Groups held at Tulane University, May 8 to June 2, 1967 under the sponsorship of the Advanced Science Seminar Projects of the National Science Foun dation (Contract No. GZ 400). They differ, however, from many such Conference proceedings in that particular emphasis has been given to the review and exposition of the state of the theory in its various mani festations, and the suggestion of direction to further research, rather than purely on the publication of research papers. That is not to say that there is no new material contained herein. On the contrary, there is an abundance of new material, many new ideas, new questions, and new conjectures~arefully incorporated within the framework of the theory as the various authors see it. An original objective of the Conference and of this report was to supply a much needed review of and supplement to the theory since the publication of the three standard works, MONTGOMERY and ZIPPIN, Topological Transformation Groups, Interscience Pub lishers, 1955, BOREL et aI. , Seminar on Transformation Groups, Annals of Math. Surveys, 1960, and CONNER and FLOYD, Differen tial Periodic Maps, Springer-Verlag, 1964. Considering this objective ambitious enough, it was decided to limit the survey to that part of Transformation Group Theory derived from the Montgomery School.

Let G be a simple algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field k whose characteristic is either 0 or a good prime for G, and let uEG be unipotent. The authors study the centralizer CG(u), especially its centre Z(CG(u)). They calculate the Lie algebra of Z(CG(u)), in particular determining its dimension; they prove a succession of theorems of increasing generality, the last of which provides a formula for dim Z(CG(u)) in terms of the labelled diagram associated to the conjugacy class containing u.
