Excerpt from The Medical News and Abstract, Vol. 38: A Consolidation of the "Medical News and Library" And the "Monthly Abstract of Medical Science;" Mitral Obstruction, as represented by the presystolic murmur, may be tolerated indefinitely, and is not incompatible with comfortable health. Of a pretty large number of cases sustaining this statement, I will refer to a few. Twelve years ago I saw a woman a few days after her confinement. She had orthopnoea, cyanosis, much anasarca, and a large dropsical eflfu sion into both pleural cavities. There was a mitral direct murmur, with moderate enlargement of the heart. The physician who attended her in labor said the dyspncea was such as to lead him to fear that She would die before the birth Of her child. She was promptly relieved by the free Operation of elaterium. She apparently regained good health. Mean while, I have seen her once, in consultation, with a moderate general dropsy. This was several years since, and I have lately heard of her as in comfortable health. I have notes of two cases, both women, who were under my observa tion for more than ten years. In both the mitral obstruction did not interfere with comfortable health. In one case death at length took place, preceded by much suffering from dyspnoea and by general dropsy. In the other case, while the patient continued to suffer but little, and was accustomed to much activity, death was caused by gangrene of both lower limbs, probably due to embolism. Excerpt from The Medical News, Vol. 56: A Weekly Medical Journal; January-June, 1890 A very good illustration of some of the ways in which lies can be told with statistics may be found in the various books and papers which have been produced in connection with the anti-vaccination controversy. In order to understand the relations between vaccina tion and smallpox, it is necessary to have the death - rates from smallpox given for different periods of life - that is, by age. In this country and in Great Britain we have no data as to the deaths by smallpox by different ages prior to the introduction of vaccination, because the registration of deaths by ages has only been carried on for a little over fifty years. W'e can, however, for Great Britain, compare the statistics of vaccination for three different periods - the first from 1847 to 1853, in which gratuitous vaccination was provided for the people, but it was purely an optional matter with some whether they should make use of it or not; from to 1871 vaccination was obligatory by law, but this was mainly theoretical, since the law was practically not em forced; from 1872 to 1880, when the vaccination was rigidly enforced. Excerpt from The Medical News, Vol. 76: A Weekly Medical Journal; January-June, 1900 The following cases of pistol-shot wound of the head, nine in number, have occurred in my service in two hospitals during the last two years: Case I. - Ambulance history: Bullet of caliber entered the head just in front of the right ear, and made its exit in the left anterior parietal region. The wound of entrance was lacerated and one inch in length; the wound of exit was lac crated and measured one-half by one-fourth-inch in diameter; brain matter was extruded from both wounds; consciousness was primarily and perma uently lost. The right pupil was dilated, the left contracted, and the corneal reflexes abolished. On admission to the hospital, thirty-five minutes after injury, the patient was still in a condition of general shock; the skin was cold and moist, pulse 120, respiration 20, and temperature F. The right pupil was still dilated, and the left less contracted. The respiratory movements became slower and of the cheyne-stokes character, edema of the lungs developed and death occurred in fifty minutes. The primary symptoms in this case can only be attributed to general cerebral contusion, and those which immediately preceded death were due to hemorrhage into the occipital basal fossae com pressing the medulla and pneumogastric nerve.
