How can a teenager adopted at birth nearly die because his real mother didn’t get a measles shot? How can a husband’s faith in his wife’s fidelity determine whether radical treatment will cure her or kill her? How can a missed eye doctor appointment reveal a genetic disease? How can doctors choose the right course for a pregnant woman when one may kill her and the other would abort her fetus? Answers to these questions and more are pursued every week on House, M.D. Premiering in November 2004, the darkly quirky medical drama introduced a compelling new character to prime-time television: the sarcastic, abrasive—and brilliant—Dr. Gregory House. Week after week, House has held viewers’ attention with brilliant cast performances and intriguing diagnostic mysteries often solved with daring treatments. But how much of the medical detail is real and how much is fabricated? In The Medical Science of House, M.D., Andrew Holtz, a well-known medical journalist, reveals how medical detectives work—how they follow symptoms to their source. He examines each case in detail—and provides answers for every viewer who has ever wondered about the authenticity of their favorite show.

HOUSE AND PHILOSOPHY Is being nice overrated? Are we really just selfish, base animals crawling across Earth in a meaningless existence? Would reading less and watching more television be good for you? Is House a master of Eastern philosophy or just plain rude? Dr. Gregory House is arguably the most complex and challenging antihero in the history of television, but is there more to this self-important genius than gray matter and ego? This book takes a deeper look at House to reveal the philosophical underpinnings of this popular medical drama and its cane-waving curmudgeon’s most outrageous behavior. What emerges is a remarkable character who is part Sherlock Holmes, part Socratic philosopher, part Nietzschean superman, part Taoist rhetorician, and not at all as screwed up as you might think. With everything from Aristotle to Zen, House and Philosophy takes an engaging look at everyone’s favorite misanthropic genius and his team at Princeton-Plainsboro Hospital. Hippocrates Shadow written by David H. Newman and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-09 with Medical categories.

Everyone knows of the Hippocratic Oath, the famous invocation sworn by all neophyte physicians. But most don't realize that the father of modern medicine was an avid listener and a constant bedside presence. Hippocrates believed in the doctor-patient connection and gained worldwide renown for championing science over mysticism while respecting and advocating the potency of human healing. Today, argues Dr. David H. Newman, medicine focuses narrowly on the rewards of technology and science, exaggerating their benefits and ignoring or minimizing their perils. Dr. Newman sees a disconnect between doctor and patient, a disregard for the healing power of the bond, and, ultimately, a disconnect between doctors and their Oath. The root of this divergence, writes Dr. Newman, lies in the patterns of secrecy and habit that characterize the "House of Medicine," modern medicine's entrenched and carefully protected subculture. In reflexive, often unconscious defense of this subculture, doctors and patients guard medical authority, cling to tradition, and yield to demands that they do something or prescribe something. The result is a biomedical culture that routinely engages in unnecessary and inefficient practices, and leaves both patient and doctor dissatisfied. While demonstrating an abiding respect for, and a deep understanding of, the import of modern science, Dr. Newman reviews research that refutes common and accepted medical wisdom. He cites studies that show how mammograms may cause more harm than good; why antibiotics for sore throats are virtually always unnecessary and therefore dangerous; how cough syrup is rarely more effective than a sugar pill; the power and paradox of the placebo effect; how statistics and studies themselves are frequently deceptive; and why CPR is violent, invasive -- and almost always futile. Through an engaging, deeply researched, and eloquent narrative laced with rich and riveting case studies, Newman cuts to the heart of what really works -- and doesn't -- in medicine and rebuilds the bridge between physicians and their patients.

ABOUT THE BOOK Season 5 of the hit Fox medical drama series House follows the life and times of the brilliant but sociopathic Dr. Gregory House as he and his medical team solve difficult and life-threatening cases at the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey. The fifth season of House provides some wonderful character-development and has a powerful finale. As a television series, House has been entertaining as a medical drama, mystery, and even a comedy. The medical terminology is relatively accurate for a one-hour television show compared to the faux science of CSI. Each episode of House is a mystery where the medical staff must locate the clues and find the diagnosis before time runs out for their patient. Sometimes even knowing the diagnosis is not enough to save the patients life. Most of the comedy comes from Houses need to undermine authority or knock people off their high horse when he feels that one deserves it. And to House, they always deserve it. MEET THE AUTHOR With a BS in Business Administration and a Technical Writing Certificate, Tom Tonthat has written anime reviews for "The Escapist," video game and television articles for Yahoo!, and the occasional instructional manual. He loves anime, origami, toys, films, television, and comics. He manages to rationalize his intuition and blur his reality and fantasy. He feels that he is in control but Wilson knows that House lives life dangerously. When the bombshell about him and Cuddy drops, House soon realizes that he can only be hurt by those he is attached to emotionally. House is the brainchild of David Shore, whose previous television production experience includes producing two late 90s seasons of Law & Order, and writing for a variety of shows like NYPD Blue, Due South, The Practice, and The Outer Limits. He was asked to come up with a medical procedural show for NBC in 2003. David's idea was to make the medical procedural show emphasize the characters over the medicine since it made for more compelling television. He decided to base the protagonist of his medical show on Sherlock Holmes and became the creator, writer, and producer of House. NBC decided to pass on House and instead chose Medical Investigation as its medical procedural show of choice. Medical Investigation was a medical mystery drama filled with an eclectic staff of medical geniuses that no one really watched and only lasted one season. Fortunately, Fox picked up on David Shore's medical drama and the rest is television history. This edited volume gathers corpus-based studies on topics including English grammar and discourses on media and health, mainly from a systemic functional linguistics (SFL) perspective, in order to reveal the potential of SFL, which has been emphasized by Halliday. Various other perspectives, such as philosophy, statistics, genre studies, etc. are also included to promote SFL’s potential interaction with other theories. Though they employ a diverse range of theoretical perspectives, all the chapters focus on exploring language in use with the corpus method. The studies collected here are all original, unpublished research articles that address significant questions, deepen readers’ understanding of SFL, and promote its potential interaction with other theories. In addition, they demonstrate the great potential that SFL holds for solving language-related questions in a variety of discourses.
