The three volumes on "The Melanotropic Peptides" are the outcome of a conference of the same name that was held in Tucson, Arizona, from October 11-12, 1986. Volume III discusses the known mechanisms of action of the two melanotropic peptides, and concludes with a discussion of the possible biomedical applications of the melanotropins.

The Industry-University Cooperative Chemistry Program has sponsored seven previous international symposia covering a wide variety of topics of interest to industrial and academic chemists. The eighth IUCCP symposium, held March 19-22, 1990, at Texas A&M University, represents a deviation from the former symposia, in that it is the first of a two-symposium series dedicated to the rapidly moving new field of industrial biochemistry that has beco~e known as biotechnology. Biotechnology is really not a new discipline, but rather is a term coined to describe the new and exciting commercial applications of biochemistry. The development of the field of biotechnology is a direct result of recombinant DNA technology, which began in earnest about 15 years ago. Today, we can routinely do experiments that were inconceivable in the early 1970's. Only comparatively simple technology available even in small laboratories is required to synthesize a gene and from it, to produce vast amounts of biological materials of enormous commercial value. These technical developments and others have stimulated increased activities in the field of enzyme biotechnology, using enzymes to catalyze "unnatural" reactions to produce complex molecules with stereochemical precision. It is true today, we can readily produce DNA fragments that will encode any amino acid sequence that we might desire, but at this point, our foundation of basic knowledge falls short. The dream of "designer enzymes" is still a fantasy, but the current wave of research activity and exciting new developments suggest that in the future the dream may become a reality.

We had the pleasure and the great opportunity to organize a symposium on "Molecular Biology of Brain and Endocrine Peptidergic Systems" under the auspices of the Canadian Biochemical society and the International Foundation for Biochemical Endocrinology. We were indeed very happy to ass~ble a series of first rate speakers who delivered excellent papers on a variety of subjects from the synthesis of complicated peptide analogs, to the creation of trangenic mice, site-directed mutagenesis, enzyme characterization and DNA binding sites. One hundred and seventy-five participants attended the 40 conferences while having the opportunity to look at 24 posters presented by senior scientists as well as students. We, of the organizing committee, feel extremely pleased to have received an overwhelming response from such a group of scholars. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Diane Marcil who arranged most aspects of the meeting with efficiency. We also thank the different organizations and companies for their generous grants which made the reunion possible. We hope that the participants have gained scientifically while having a pleasant sojourn in beautiful Montreal. The organizing committee was made up of a group of dedicated people, particularly its secretary, Dr. Philippe Crine. To all speakers and sessions chairpersons, we are indebted for the excellence of their participation.

It discusses holistic information about mammalian endocrinology, and more particularly, about human endocrinology. The text reviews the basic concepts and the scientific understanding of each of the major endocrine glands. Each chapter has been written with a view that a beginner may easily comprehend the subject matter. Endocrine methodologies, wherever appropriate, have been incorporated in chapters, and similarly medical aspects of endocrine or harmonal disorders resulting out of mutational changes in hormone receptors are included, to make the text more interesting. Coverage of topics includes Cell signalling and the mechanism of action of hormones Chemical structure and classes of hormones Reproductive endocrinology Behavioural endocrinology Environmental endocrinology

This volume of conference papers evaluates recent findings on the biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology of melanocyte-stimulating hormones (MSH) and melanin-concentrating hormones (MCH). Current knowledge on hormonal and neuromodulator/neurotransmitter functions of melanotropins is also presented.
