Born into a background of dock workers in Wapping in the 1940s, the author's recollections of the old, unrecon- structed Docklands and the closely knit families of 'real' East Enders who lived there provides fascinating reading. Well educated and imbued with a strong work ethic (albeit a Catholic one), Patricia Gudge was a star at school but was destined - like many of her gender and background - to become a foot soldier in the vast corporate battlefield of twentieth-century London. Here, 'a good day's work for a fair day's pay' meant commuting from Kent, sometimes at weekends, to unrewarding toil as a solicitor's PA. Despite marital disruptions and health problems, the author soldiered on to a welcome retirement spent in travel in Europe and the UK, catching up on family life, and creative pursuits. It's a tale well told, with a wealth of personal detail (from first kiss to first grandchild), and it's a reminder that idleness is not an option for most of us! Patricia Gudge was born in East London in 1947. Educated at a Catholic grammar school, she worked in the City of London for most of her working life. Since retiring, she has spent her time writing and researching family history as well as enjoying time spent with her four grandchildren.

The East End of London has a fascinating history. Often it has been violent and lawless throwing up criminals like Jack the Ripper and the Krays. It has always been a place where migrants from foreign lands have settled thus it has a diverse and vibrant culture which is a characteristic it retains and therefore can be said to be a constant. The brief period described in this memoir runs from 1945 to 1963 and is concerned with the author's childhood in Stratford - today a central place in an East End which extends from The City out to Romford. The book explores the culture and morals of the time through the life of the author and his family, friends and acquaintances. East End kids then were inventive and adventurous and their street life was full of exciting activities which these days would sometimes astonish and, indeed, would not be possible. Above all the author attempts to capture the sense of community and belonging that those East End streets engendered. Moreover, it conveys a sense of nostalgia and loss for a time which was precious, fleeting and now gone forever as the technological world made its impact, sweeping away a social context which, hitherto, had prevailed for centuries. The author added 'Just' to the title to covey two thoughts - that he is simply an East End boy and that he is now only tenuously an East End boy.

Growing up in Glasgow in the 1930s, Roy Archibald Hall was a natural thief. After moving down to London, Hall who was bisexual became a familiar figure in the capital's glitzy, underground gay scene. Due to his lucrative criminal career, he led an extravagant lifestyle. Eventually the law caught up with him and he was arrested. He spent the majority of the next two decades of his life in a cell. Upon release from prison in 1975, he returned to Scotland and found employment with Lady Margaret Hudson, working as a butler at Kirleton House. David Wright, a former lover from his time in jail, arrived on the scene and was hired as a gamekeeper. The two men fell out over the theft of a diamond ring, and a vicious argument ensued. They went on a shooting trip to clear the air a walk from which Wright would never return. After the killing, Hall moved back to London, where he teamed up with small-time criminal Michael Kitto. Working again as a butler, he and Kitto then murdered Hall's new employers, an aged former Labour MP and his wife. But it did not end there by the time he was finally arrested, he had carried out two more brutal murders, including that of his own half-brother. Considering the nature of his crimes it was obvious that Hall would never be released. Before he died, however, he decided to set the record straight and write his memoirs.
