It was about two thousand years ago the Roman historian Tacitus reported the Germanics venerated Mercury above all. He meant a Germanic God he equated with Mercury. Because Tacitus didn't denominate the name of that God, it had to be interpreted. Many centuries later scholars widely agreed that the name of this God must be Woden. In western astrology we use of course Roman names for the planetary symbols; but when you look on the mythological explanations, you usually get Greek mythology to explain them. Doesn't count: NOMEN EST OMEN ? Searching the mythological rests of the original deities Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturnus it was necessesary to dive deeply into the history of theology because the well-known literates like Ovid, Virgil and Lucretius preferred to retell Greek myths instead of preserving their own roots. In the last centuries (until about 1900) these authors werde taken as sources for theological research and there was no discrimination between literature/poetry and original italic tradition. Perspective and moral view of the 19th century added more misinterpretations and made the knowledge of Roman religion almost vanish. Existing rests are collected in this book and compared with the actual astrological symbols. So the reader can recognize how much of Roman ideas can be found in the planetary symbols nowadays. The period 550 to 750 was one in which monastic culture became more firmly entrenched in Western Europe. The role of monasteries and their relationship to the social world around them was transformed during this period as monastic institutions became more integrated in social and political power networks. This collected volume of essays focuses on one of the central figures in this process, the Irish ascetic exile and monastic founder, Columbanus (c. 550-615), his travels on the Continent, and the monastic network he and his Frankish disciples established in Merovingian Gaul and Lombard Italy. The post-Roman kingdoms through which Columbanus travelled and established his monastic foundations were made up of many different communities of peoples. As an outsider and immigrant, how did Columbanus and his communities interact with these peoples? How did they negotiate differences and what emerged from these encounters? Hardly any other scripture from the time of the Roman Empire of about two thousand years ago has stirred up so much excited attention as the "Germania" of Tacitus. Only from this ethnographic essay do we know the name Nerthus, a goddess who should have been venerated by seven smaller Germanic tribes. Much of what the "Germania" tells us is meanwhile highly doubted. The 1st century original no longer exists; the intact copies were on their part copied from older "Germania" texts, which were also just copies. The existing copies are not identical to each other. That causes many question marks, which also concern this goddess Nerthus. This book is an attempt to place some exclamation marks in front of that, and is sometimes deliberately provocative.
