While Middlesex County is one of the most historic communities in the nation, some of its past is little known. Researchers found dinosaur tracks in Middlefield that date back 200 million years. The author of Dr. Dolittle, Hugh Lofting, lived in Killingworth, and a young Dr. Seuss spent summers in Clinton. Constance Baker Motley, the first female African American federal judge, resided in Chester. A Portland lake has water levels that fluctuate for no apparent reason. An Essex blacksmith shop was America's oldest continuously run family business. Local authors Robert and Kathleen Hubbard reveal these and many other unforgettable stories.

Civil War Collection Of Middlesex County Historical Society written by Middlesex County Historical Society (Middletown, Conn.) and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1859 with Middletown (Conn.) categories.

Series I, Soldiers, has documents relating to individual soldiers who fought in the Civil War. While not all of the individuals are from Middletown and Middlesex County, the majority of the men addressed in this series are related in some way to the area. Documents included in this series include letters, diaries, discharges, pension records and applications, and in select cases photographs. The folders are organized alphabetically by last name and are contained in the first two boxes of the Civil War Collection. Series II, Regiments and Aid Societies, contains documents pertaining to specific regiments, the majority of them from Connecticut, include rolls of honor, muster rolls, reports, newspaper articles, and histories. Each folder concerns a specific regiment or a specific type of document relating to the military. Documents pertaining to specific aid societies include inventories, circulars, and correspondence to and from the societies. Each folder concerns one individual aid society. Series III includes documents that relate to individuals, events, army life, or the structuring and fighting of the war. These include army reports, letters, bonds, newspapers, various booklets and publications, and correspondences of soldiers not included in Series I. Series IV includes any documents that have to do with the war's aftermath. These documents either concern memorializing or remembering the Civil War and those who fought in it or secondary documents that concern the Civil War. The majority of the documents in this series are newspaper articles that concern Middletown's own historic Civil War cannons and the proceedings for building a soldier's monument. Series V contains documents that relate to the Middlesex County Historical Society's Civil War objects and archives. These documents would probably only be helpful to those who work at the Society or individuals who are studying the inner workings of a museum. Documents in this series include old tags for objects in the Society's Civil War Relics Room, receipts for Russell Library's War Relics Room/Museum, and notes for the Society's 1991 Civil War Show--Hard Tack, Salt Pork and Faith.
