Although the Milky Way is the most studied and best understood galactic system, there are many fundamental questions about our Galaxy that remain unanswered. This book concentrates on those questions which have the widest applicability in all of astrophysics, and for which answers are most likely to be forthcoming in the next few years. Is the Milky Way a barred spiral, and if so, what are its properties? Is the disk of the Milky Way axisymmetric and what does the answer tell us about its dynamical history? Is there a black hole at the center of the Galaxy? How far does the Galaxy extend? How much dark matter is there in the Milky Way system? And more.

Beyond The Galaxy written by Ethan Siegel and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-26 with Science categories.

' A look up at the night sky reveals a treasury of wonders. Even to the naked eye, the Moon, stars, planets, the Milky Way and even a few star clusters and nebulae illuminate the heavens. For millennia, humans struggled to make sense of what''s out there in the Universe, from all we can see to that which lies beyond the limits of even our most powerful telescopes. Beyond the Galaxy traces our journey from an ancient, Earth-centered Universe all the way to our modern, 21st century understanding of the cosmos. Touching on not only what we know but also how we know it, Ethan Siegel takes us to the very frontiers of modern astrophysics and cosmology, from the birth of our Universe to its ultimate fate, and everything in between. Contents:So Far, So Good: The Universe at the Start of the 20th CenturyA Relatively Different Story: How Einstein''s Relativity Revolutionized Space, Time, and the UniverseBeyond the Milky Way: A Giant Leap into an Expanding UniverseThe Great Leap Backwards: Theories on Where It All Came FromAn Element-ary Story: How the Stars Gave Life to the UniverseAll the Way Back: It Started with a BangWhat Does It Matter: Why There is More Matter Than Antimatter in the UniverseBefore the Big Bang: How the Entire Universe BeganDancing in the Dark: Dark Matter and the Great Cosmic WebThe Ultimate End: Dark Energy and the Fate of the UniversePast, Present and Future: All We Know About All There Is Readership: General public interested in astronomy, astrophysics and/or cosmology. Key Features:Author of well-known physics blog "Starts with a bang"Keywords:Astronomy;Physics;Astrophysics;Cosmology;Space "Beyond the Galaxy offers a fun, informative excursion through the universe and the complex history of our attempts to grapple with its size, age and content. Ethan Siegel writes clearly and confidently, drawing upon wonderful analogies and fascinating tidbits of astronomical history, including outstanding accounts of the heated debates of the past about the nature of the cosmos. The book is richly illustrated, nicely supplementing Siegel''s lucid prose. A must read for anyone curious about the development of cosmology and where it stands today!" Paul Halpern Author of Einstein''s Dice and Schrödinger''s Cat "Ethan Siegel takes us on an engaging journey from the smallest to the largest scales of space and time. He illuminates the path with abundant useful figures, and clearly explains the varied topics he tackles. His descriptions for how the Universe expands, depending upon what it is made of, are particularly nice. His prose exudes enthusiasm and passion — not just for the things we have learned, but for the scientific process. A great read for the science enthusiast." Robert Garisto Editor Physical Review Letters "Ethan Siegel has achieved the rare feat of writing a textbook that reads like an engrossing page-turner. This is a book that belongs on the reading list of every undergraduate introduction to astrophysics and cosmology." Dr Roberto Trotta Senior Lecturer in Astrophysics at Imperial College London and author of ''The Edge of the Sky: All you need to know about the All-There-Is'' "With eloquence and clarity, Siegel tells us the story of the universe, from the (inferred) cosmic inflation and the Big Bang at the very beginning to the (predicted) Big Freeze at the very end. Beyond the Galaxy is one of those rare books that not only communicates scientific ideas, but communicates what science itself is all about." The Physics Mill '

The Search For Ultralight Bosonic Dark Matter written by Derek F. Jackson Kimball and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-28 with Science categories.

A host of astrophysical measurements suggest that most of the matter in the Universe is an invisible, nonluminous substance that physicists call “dark matter.” Understanding the nature of dark matter is one of the greatest challenges of modern physics and is of paramount importance to our theories of cosmology and particle physics. This text explores one of the leading hypotheses to explain dark matter: that it consists of ultralight bosons forming an oscillating field that feebly interacts with light and matter. Many new experiments have emerged over the last decade to test this hypothesis, involving state-of-the-art microwave cavities, precision nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, dark matter “radios,” and synchronized global networks of atomic clocks, magnetometers, and interferometers. The editors have gathered leading experts from around the world to present the theories motivating these searches, evidence about dark matter from astrophysics, and the diverse experimental techniques employed in searches for ultralight bosonic dark matter. The text provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to this blossoming field of research for advanced undergraduates, beginning graduate students, or anyone new to the field, with tutorials and solved problems in every chapter. The multifaceted nature of the research – combining ideas and methods from atomic, molecular, and optical physics, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, electrical engineering, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology – makes this introductory approach attractive for beginning researchers as well as members of the broader scientific community. This is an open access book.

Being Scioto Hopewell Ritual Drama And Personhood In Cross Cultural Perspective written by Christopher Carr and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-05 with History categories.

This book, in two volumes, breathes fresh air empirically, methodologically, and theoretically into understanding the rich ceremonial lives, the philosophical-religious knowledge, and the impressive material feats and labor organization that distinguish Hopewell Indians of central Ohio and neighboring regions during the first centuries CE. The first volume defines cross-culturally, for the first time, the “ritual drama” as a genre of social performance. It reconstructs and compares parts of 14 such dramas that Hopewellian and other Woodland-period peoples performed in their ceremonial centers to help the soul-like essences of their deceased make the journey to an afterlife. The second volume builds and critiques ten formal cross-cultural models of “personhood” and the “self” and infers the nature of Scioto Hopewell people’s ontology. Two facets of their ontology are found to have been instrumental in their creating the intercommunity alliances and cooperation and gathering the labor required to construct their huge, multicommunity ceremonial centers: a relational, collective concept of the self defined by the ethical quality of the relationships one has with other beings, and a concept of multiple soul-like essences that compose a human being and can be harnessed strategically to create familial-like ethical bonds of cooperation among individuals and communities. The archaeological reconstructions of Hopewellian ritual dramas and concepts of personhood and the self, and of Hopewell people’s strategic uses of these, are informed by three large surveys of historic Woodland and Plains Indians’ narratives, ideas, and rites about journeys to afterlives, the creatures who inhabit the cosmos, and the nature and functions of soul-like essences, coupled with rich contextual archaeological and bioarchaeological-taphonomic analyses. The bioarchaeological-taphonomic method of l’anthropologie de terrain, new to North American archaeology, is introduced and applied. In all, the research in this book vitalizes a vision of an anthropology committed to native logic and motivation and skeptical of the imposition of Western world views and categories onto native peoples.
