Some warriors are drawn to the thrill of combat and find it the defining moment of their lives. Others fall victim to fear, exhaustion, impaired reasoning and despair. This book synthesizes the wartime experiences of American soldiers, from the doughboys of World War I to the grunts of Vietnam. Focusing on both soldiers and marines, it draws on histories and memoirs, oral histories, psychological and sociological studies and even fiction to show that their experiences remain fundamentally the same regardless of the enemy, terrain, training or weaponry.

On February 19, 1945, seven battalions of U.S. Marines landed on the eastern beaches of Iwo Jima. On the southernmost flank, in the shadows of Suribachi, the First Battalion, 28th Marines, stormed ashore into the bloodiest and most renowned of all battles fought by the U.S. Marine Corps. Thirty-six days later, the Marines overran the "Bloody Gorge" and dislodged the last enemy holdouts. The battle was over, but at great cost: 225 of the First Battalion's men died on Iwo Jima. Based on official reports and personal accounts, this is a day-by-day history of the First Battalion, 28th Marines, on Iwo Jima. Each chapter presents an overview of that day's combat and other relevant events, and also contains the text of that day's official regimental and battalion narratives. The text is complemented by a chronology and transcribed muster rolls for February and March 1945.

In his book Men Against Fire, [historian S. L. A.] Marshall asserted that only 15 to 25 percent of American soldiers ever fired their weapons in combat in World War II. . . . Shooting at the enemy made a man part of the “team,” or “brotherhood.” There were, of course, many times when soldiers did not want to shoot, such as at night when they did not want to give away a position or on reconnaissance patrols. But, in the main, no combat soldier in his right mind would have deliberately sought to go through the entire ear without ever firing his weapon, because he would have been excluded from the brotherhood but also because it would have been detrimental to his own survival. One of [rifle company commander Harold] Leinbaugh’s NCOs summed it up best when discussing Marshall: “Did the SOB think we clubbed the Germans to death?”

After a terrifying nightmare, Joseph Paul Robinson wakes in the subway. But stations are named after places on the Monopoly board, all the station exits are blocked, and he's lost his memory. Eventually, he discovers that he is dead. After a bittersweet reunion with his deceased parents, he is left on his own in the Spiritual-Material Afterlife Rapid Transit (SMART) system to find his way to redemption or damnation. While following Joe, we meet others in this complex, fascinating and funny morality tale. There is Luscious "Mack" Brown, the sharecropper, facing a lynch mob in 1931. There is Tony Santini, the Korean War soldier facing his consequences in 1951. There is Effie Parker, the pure-hearted SMART Guide who died rescuing children from a fire in 1870. And there is Mortese the Stalker, a Demon seeking all the souls he can get. In this, his first novel, author Gerald Davis takes us on a ride into an imaginative exploration of the afterlife, inspired by modern accounts of near-death experiences. It is a highly readable parable addressing classic themes of good against evil, of faith, social responsibility, and the decline of American values.
