Excerpt from The Mind and Art of Poe's Poetry I have kept, whimsically, to a study of Poe's poetry and known no other poet the while; I have therefore no Opinions to venture on questions of comparative merit. This study would not have been possible but for the Stone and Kimball edition of Poe's works, collected and edited by Mr. E. C. Stedman and Professor G. E. Wood berry. The tenth volume furnishes a complete Variorum Text of the Poems. Reference has been made to this edition by volume and page. Reference has been made also to that authoritative biography of Poe, in the American Men of Letters Series, by Professor Woodberry. Excerpt from Poe and His Poetry This is to some extent recognised by writers of histories and text-books of literature, and by editors Of selections from the works Of our poets for place is always given by them to a certain amount Of biographical material. But in the histories and text-books the biography Of a given writer stands by itself, and his work has to be sought elsewhere, the student being left to make the connection for himself while even in our current editions of selections there is little systematic attempt to link biography, step by step, with production. Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works and Essays on Poetry of Edgar Allan Poe: Together With His Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym IN placing before the public this collection of Edgar Poe's poetical works, it is requisite to point out in what respects it differs from, and is superior to, the numerous collections which have preceded it. Until recently, all editions, whether American or English, of Poe's poems have been verbatim reprints of the first posthumous collection, published at New York in 1850. Excerpt from Poe and His Poetry A glance through the pages of this little book will suffice to disclose the general plan of the series of which it forms a part. Only a few words of explanation, therefore, will be necessary. The point of departure is the undeniable fact that with the vast majority of young students of literature a living interest in the work of any poet can best be aroused, and an intelligent appreciation of it secured, when it is immediately associated with the character and career of the port himself. The cases are indeed few and far between in which much fresh light will not be thrown upon a poem by some knowledge of the personality of the writer, while it will often be found that the most direct - perhaps even the only - way to the heart of its meaning lies through a consideration of the circumstances in which it had its birth. The purely æsthetic critic may possible object that a poem should be regarded simply as a self-contained and detached piece of art, having no personal affiliations or bearings. Of the validity of this as an abstract principle nothing need now be said. The fact remains that, in the earlier stages of study at any rate, poetry is most valued and loved when it is made to seem most human and vital; and the human and vital interest of poetry can be most surely brought home to the reader by the biographical method of interpretation. Explore the transcendent world of unity and ultimate beauty in Edgar Allan Poe’s verse in this complete poetry collection. Although best known for his short stories, Edgar Allan Poe was by nature and choice a poet. From his exquisite lyric “To Helen,” to his immortal masterpieces, “Annabel Lee,” “The Bells,” and “The Raven,” Poe stands beside the celebrated English romantic poets Shelley, Byron, and Keats, and his haunting, sensuous poetic vision profoundly influenced the Victorian giants Swinburne, Tennyson, and Rossetti. Today his dark side speaks eloquently to contemporary readers in poems such as “The Haunted Palace” and “The Conqueror Worm,” with their powerful images of madness and the macabre. But even at the end of his life, Poe reached out to his art for comfort and courage, giving us in “Eldorado” a talisman to hold during our darkest moments—a timeless gift from a great American writer. Includes an Introduction by Jay Parini and an Afterword by April Bernard
