Excerpt from The Mind in the Making This is an essay - not a treatise - on the most important of all matters of human con cern. Although it has cost its author a great deal more thought and labor than will be apparent, it falls, in his estimation, far below the demands of its implacably urgent theme. Each page could readily be expanded into a volume. It suggests but the beginning of the beginning now being made to raise men's thinking onto a plain which may perhaps enable them to fend OH or reduce some of the dangers which lurk on every hand. Excerpt from Mind in the Making: A Study in Mental Development The most significant tendency in educational litera ture to-day is the substitution of the individual for the course of study as the basis of constructive pedagogy. The rapid growth of American cities has centred attention upon the machinery of school systems, while the great increase in college attendance and the influ ence of the methods of German universities have too completely submerged the individual. Educators have lately been taking an inventory and have discovered racial and individual assets which had to a great extent been overlooked. Some of these formative influences are positive forces which should be directed into lines advantageous to the individual and to society; others, which are negative and tend to mental arrest, should, so far as possible, be curbed and repressed. An environ ment which is good in one instance may be inert in another. To foster growth it must meet individual needs, and these can be learned only by studying the native tendencies and peculiar dispositions of pupil and student. This book is a plea for the personal element in education, and for the extension of the experimental method. Excerpt from The Story of the Mind IN this little book I have endeavoured to maintain the simplicity which is the ideal of this series. It is more difficult, however, to be simple in a topic which, even in its illustrations, demands of the reader more or less facility in the exploration of his own mind. I am persuaded that the attempt to make the matter of psychology more elementary than is here done, would only result in making it untrue and so in defeating its own object. Excerpt from The Mind and Its Education This book is intended as an introduction to psychology for teachers, both in their private study and their Reading Circle classes, for students in secondary schools, normal schools or colleges, and for general readers. Its appearance is an immediate outgrowth of various courses of lectures on psychology and education given to teachers and elementary students in education. More remotely, it owes its origin to a suggestion received from Prof. John Dewey when the writer was a student in his classes. Said Professor Dewey: "The teacher is equally under the necessity of knowing each of the two factors in the educational process - culture and the child; that is, subject-matter and psychology - not the technicalities and controversial points of psychology, but its broad and fundamental truths, upon which practically all are agreed, and which, fortunately, are simple and easily understood." This statement furnishes the standpoint, in the following pages, for both subject-matter and method of treatment. First, the attempt has been made to present only fundamental truths, which, let us be thankful, are but little subject to controversy. Excerpt from The Mind at Work: A Handbook of Applied Psychology The study of the mind cannot properly be separated from the study of the body, for the two are most intimately related. We all know that when tired and hungry the brain refuses to work. We cannot think clearly. A glass of wine and a biscuit and a short rest restores to us our mental faculties. Or to put the case the other way, good news stimulates appetite, while shock or anxiety gives a distaste for food. These are simple and obvious illustrations; but there are much more remarkable ones that we shall have to discuss later on. The greater part of our mental life is necessarily made up of impressions of the outside world that reach us by means of our senses. The eyes and ears and other receptive organs are constantly telegraphing messages to the brain along the nerve fibres. It is one of the chief functions of the mind to interpret these messages, and they eventually, in some mysterious fashion, pass into the region of our consciousness. These primary sensations of a physical origin supply the science of psychology with a convenient starting-point for its investigation, and the study of sensation forms a link between the science of the body and the science of the mind. The Mind in the Making is a book to awaken every reader to a real understanding of why he thinks and acts as he does. It is the well-known historian's straightforward account of how our intelligence has evolved into the mental habits of modern life. No book for popular reading shows so graphically that our thinking remains medieval in a world that has become complex and modern. It will show you whether your thinking is ahead of the times or behind them. If some magical transformation could be produced in men's ways of looking at themselves and their fellows, no inconsiderable part of the evils which now afflict society would vanish away or remedy themselves automatically. If the majority of influential persons held the opinions and occupied the point of view that a few rather uninfluential people now do, there would, for instance, be no likelihood of another great war; the whole problem of "labor and capital" would be transformed and attenuated; national arrogance, race animosity, political corruption, and inefficiency would all be reduced below the danger point.

Excerpt from Originality: A Popular Study of the Creative Mind TO know, to feel, to resolve - these are the functions of mind which appear to occupy the attention of those men and women who act as leaders of the community. Rightly construed, such functions embrace the whole of our possible existence, but, unfortunately, they are seldom construed in the right way. Invention or creation is the highest mental activity of which we are capable, and yet in education, in religion, in science, in everything, it is an activity which does not receive its due. This is owing, in part, to the immense growth of knowledge, and to the intense interest in acquiring it; a tendency is set up to live mentally by amassing information; and the more individual tendencies of the mind are gradually eclipsed. It is a 'noteworthy achievement to master the literature of education; but it is more masterly to know less about it and to be a Montessori. It is indicative of great memory power to be able to recite the poems Of John Milton but it is better to be able to indite a new poem that shall equal one of his. It is distinctive to be an oracle of reference on all matters financial or economic; but it is a finer thing to Offer an original contribution to the solution of the problems of currency. The feeling of superiority that is associated with the creative mind is not difficult to understand, and it is appreciated to the full by most people; nevertheless there appears to be no attempt worthy of the name to discover and develop the mental processes leading to originality, presumably because genius has always been regarded as a gift, needing neither training nor experience.
