The Mirror of God's Word A Biblical View of Physical Beauty Surgery to remove a brain tumor resulted in a change to Robin's facial features, causing her to take a deep look into the mirror of God's Word to find the answers to questions many of us have asked. "Why did God create me as He did when He is certainly capable of creating so much beauty?" "If beauty brings honor and glory to God, how can I possibly do so in my current physical condition?" "Is it possible for me to be content with my appearance?" "Will I ever be able to focus on others without thinking about how I look?" "How important is physical beauty to God anyway?" These are just some of the questions Robin seeks to answer in this six-week Bible study. The lessons contained herein do not focus on the subject of "inner beauty," although that is important to God. Instead, they are designed to help us transform our thinking by giving us God's viewpoint on this all-too-often misunderstood subject of physical beauty.

Susan Heck expounds on the book of First John with the same love and tenderness the Apostle John used in writing the book. The theme of the book is expressed well in 1 John 2:1: "My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." This is an excellent small group Bible study for women.

'Reveals an until-now hidden history of women's self-portraiture. A gift that keeps on giving' ALI SMITH, NEW STATESMAN, Books of the Year 'A fascinating survey . . . Extraordinary' DAILY MAIL 'A bewitching, invigorating history' OLIVIA LAING 'Grips from the opening pages' FINANCIAL TIMES 'Important and brilliantly accessible' VOGUE Until the twentieth century, art history was, in the main, written by white men who tended to write about other white men. The idea that women in the West have always made art was rarely cited as a possibility. Yet they have - and, of course, continue to do so - often against tremendous odds, from laws and religion to the pressures of family and public disapproval. In THE MIRROR AND THE PALETTE, Jennifer Higgie introduces us to a cross-section of women artists who embody the fact that there is more than one way to understand our planet, more than one way to live in it and more than one way to make art about it. Spanning 500 years, biography and cultural history intertwine in a narrative packed with tales of rebellion, adventure, revolution, travel and tragedy enacted by women who turned their back on convention and lived lives of great resilience, creativity and bravery. This is a dazzlingly original and ambitious book by one of the most well-respected art critics at work today.

“Exuberant, astute, and splendidly illustrated history of world art . . . draws fascinating parallels between artistic developments in Western and non-Western art.”—Publishers Weekly In this beautifully written story of art, Julian Bell tells a vivid and compelling history of human artistic achievements, from prehistoric stone carvings to the latest video installations. Bell, himself a painter, uses a variety of objects to reveal how art is a product of our shared experience and how, like a mirror, it can reflect the human condition. With hundreds of illustrations and a uniquely global perspective, Bell juxtaposes examples that challenge and enlighten the reader: dancing bronze figures from southern India, Romanesque sculptures, Baroque ceilings, and jewel-like Persian manuscripts are discussed side by side. With an insider’s knowledge and an unerring touch, Bell weaves these diverse strands into an invaluable introduction to the wider history of world art.

In order to study living organisms, scientists not only study them at an overall macroscopic scale but also on a more detailed microscopic scale. This observation, pushed to its limits, consists of investigating the very center of each cell, where we find the molecules that determine the way it functions: DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid). In an organism, DNA carries the genetic information, which is called the genome. It is represented as four-letter sequences using the letters A, C, G and T; based on these sequences, computer methods described in this book can answer fundamental questions in bioinformatics. This book explores how to quickly find sequences of a few hundred nucleotides within a genome that may be made up of several billion, how to compare those sequences and how to reconstruct the complete sequence of a genome. It also discusses the problems of identifying bacteria in a given environment and predicting the structure of RNA based on its sequence.
