This book is an English re-writing of the original Hebrew edition, published by Dvir Publishing House, in 2007, and written jointly with the late Herzl Shmueli. The book probes into the nature and quality of the beauty and meaning of music. According to the authors, these have to be found within the musical phenomena themselves and serve as the basis for the aesthetical criteria of all music. They maintain that similar to every linguistic phenomena, music is a message in sound that moves, within a certain time limit, from musician to listener. The musician on the one hand, and the listener on the other, are the two focal points between which the musical process takes place. Music is thus a covenant between the musician and the listener. One sends the musical message, the other takes it up and internalizes it; one is the initiator, the other proves the successful outcome of the artistic process. The book is intended for music connoisseurs and for all who are intersted in artistic thought, in general, and in musical thoughts in particular. Every professional concept that had to be included in the book is duly explained, so that any interested reader is able to broaden the scope of his/her outlook.

The definitive guide to the meaning of today's most popular praise and worship songs. Few things influence Christians' understanding of the faith more than the songs they sing in worship. The explosion of praise and worship music in the last fifteen years has profoundly affected our experience of God. So what are those songs telling us about who God is? In what ways have they made us more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ? In what ways have they failed to embody the full message of the gospel? Working with the lists of the most frequently sung praise and worship songs from recent years, the authors of this book offer an objective but supportive assessment of the meaning and contribution of the Christian music that has been so important in the lives of contemporary believers.

The church body in this book indicates or refers to the people or members of the church. The psychology of it all means why we act, react, become a part of, or lack thereof regarding the church as an institution, and why and how we react to those within our religious institutions or denominations. What is written in this book is not an affront toward any church or religious practice; rather it is a compilation of comments and statements as well as my own observations. Those interviewed for this project were members of a church and some were not, but they wanted to share their observations based on what they consider to be Christian behavior.

Music has the power to soothe and heal, to ease hurt, empathize with sorrow, provide comfort, elicit hope, and transform minds and hearts. The general goal of this project is to encourage the members of Christian Union Church to follow the Great Commission, and to transform the neighborhood around us. More specifically, it encourages this church to utilize the evangelistic tools of the Word of God, music, and song to fonn a community gospel choir consisting of at-risk and high-risk youth. The goal of this choir is to provide such youth with musical education, exposure to the gospel message through word and song, and a safe haven, and through such a choir to cultivate and strengthen the relationships established over the years between the CUC congregation and the community. I firmly believe that when we touch the lives of young people, we touch the lives of their parents as well, thereby providing cue the opportunity to share the gospel message of hope with both the youth and their families. Sharing this hope opens the door to a salvation that is powerful enough to transform the lives of individuals, the family, the community, and the CUC congregation. Time constraints prevent the formation of such a community gospel choir at the time of this writing; thus this study outlines the process and the steps for the CUC to take to lay the foundation for the future implementation of such a community gospel choir.

This book argues that musicals provide millions of people across the world not just with entertainment and escapism but with spiritual and theological values, a philosophy of life and an encounter with God. It traces the underlying philosophy and world-view found in musical theatre from Gilbert & Sullivan to The Lion King and Rent. The spiritual, theological and philosophical resonances of seminal musicals like Carousel, Jesus Christ Superstar and Les Miserables are discussed in detail and the book ends by looking at what message musical theatre may have for the churches and for Christian worship in particular.

Beginning with the era of synchronized sound in the 1920s, music has been an integral part of motion pictures. Whether used to heighten the tension of a scene or evoke a subtle emotional response, scores have played a significant—if often unrealized—role in the viewer’s enjoyment. In The Invisible Art of Film Music, Laurence MacDonald provides a comprehensive introduction for the general student, film historian, and aspiring cinematographer. Arranged chronologically from the silent era to the present day, this volume provides insight into the evolution of music in cinema and analyzes the vital contributions of scores to hundreds of films. MacDonald reviews key developments in film music and discusses many of the most important and influential scores of the last nine decades, including those from Modern Times, Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, Laura, A Streetcar Named Desire, Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, The Godfather, Jaws, Ragtime, The Mission, Titanic, Gladiator, The Lord of the Rings, Brokeback Mountain, and Slumdog Millionaire. MacDonald also provides biographical sketches of such great composers as Max Steiner, Alfred Newman, Franz Waxman, Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein, Henry Mancini, Maurice Jarre, John Barry, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Dave Grusin, Ennio Morricone, Randy Newman, Hans Zimmer, and Danny Elfman. Updated and expanded to include scores produced well into the twenty-first century, this new edition of The Invisible Art of Film Music will appeal not only to scholars of cinema and musicologists but also any fan of film scores.

Singing Out written by Heather MacLachlan and has been published by University of Michigan Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-01 with Music categories.

Can you change the world through song? This appealing idea has long been the professed aim of singers who are part of choruses affiliated with the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). Theses choruses first emerged in the 1970s, and grew out of a very American tradition of (often gender-segregated) choral singing that explicitly presents itself as a community-based activity. By taking a close look at these choruses and their mission, Heather MacLachlan unpacks the fascinating historical and cultural dynamics behind groups that seek to change society for the better by encouraging acceptance of LGBT-identified people and promoting diversity more generally. She characterizes their mission as “integrationist rather than liberationist” and zeroes in on the inherent tension between GALA’s progressive social goals and the fact that the music most often performed by GALA groups is deeply rooted in a fairly narrowly conceived tradition of art music that identifies as white, Euro-centric, and middle class--and that much of the membership identifies as white and middle class as well. Pundits often wax eloquent about the power of music, asserting that it can, in some positive way, change the world. Such statements often rest on an unexamined claim that music can and does foster social justice. Singing Out: GALA Choruses and Social Change tackles the premise underlying such claims, analyzing groups of amateur singers who are explicitly committed to an agenda of social justice.
