Excerpt from The Modern Hebrew and the Hebrew Christian The first thing I can remember, and that only as a. Dream, is the death of my father, when I was not quite four years old. But I have a distinct remem brance of what occurred after that age. Regularly every morning, as soon as I was washed and dressed, my nurse used to take me to my mother, who was seated in her arm-chair, and after the usual morning kiss, I folded my hands, and my mother prayed with me in Hebrew. She would then take me in her arms, kiss me, and carry me to the table where my brother and Sisters were assembled. A piece of bread was then placed in my hand, and in a. Loud voice I pronounced the following blessing in Hebrew Blessed art Thou, O Jehovah, our God, King of the Universe, who bringest forth bread from the earth. Then all present would say, Amen. The meal concluded, I was taught in the Aramean language, to say Praised be the merciful One, the Lord and King of this food. In the evening, before I was put to bed, my mother again prayed with me, in Hebrew, concluding with the words Into Thy hands, 0 Lord, I commit my Spirit, while I sleep, even until I awake, for Thou, God, art my Protector, in whom I can trust. Excerpt from The Modern Hebrew and the Hebrew Christian "I have read Mr. Bassin's narrative with much interest and not a little benefit The first part gives details on many points of Jewish life, of which we are very ignorant, but on which it is useful for us to have information. The state of Jewish belief and opinion on religious subjects is brought out very fully. The second part has a remarkable interest of its own, - the reader is carried on from chapter to chapter with a profound interest in Mr. Bassin's experience and treatment, and an eager desire to know how the story is to end. From all I have seen of Mr. Bassin, as a student in one of my classes in the New College, and otherwise, I have been led to form a high opinion of his scholarship, his abilities, and his Christian sincerity. "In accordance with Professor Blaikie's testimony to Mr. Elieser Bassin's narrative, I have to express the great interest with which I have read it, and my conviction that it cannot fail to interest and inform a large circle of readers who care for all that concerns the race of Israel, - that old nation which is every year taking a place of increased importance in the human family, whose past has been by the Lord so deeply worked in the history of our redemption, and whose future is so closely bound up with the salvation of the world. Excerpt from Outlines of Introduction to the Hebrew Bible It is not every type of mind that finds attraction in the teaching and thought of the Old Testament; while to some its form is difficult or even repellent. By others, again, the importance of the New Testament is so vividly realised, that the tendency to depreciate by comparison the Old is almost welcomed, and its present interest and significance is made of little account. If, however, half a century ago it was upon the New Testament that attention was concentrated, and upon its genuineness and authority attack was directed by those who desired the overthrow of Christian doctrine and influence, the position is altogether altered to-day. It is the dignity and authority, the credibility and claims of the Old Testament that are debated most keenly, and most confidently called in question. And it is vain for the Christian Church to suppose that she can surrender her heritage in the Old, and yet maintain unimpaired the validity of the doctrines, and the power of the truth which she finds in the New. Upon the former the latter is founded and established; from the New to the Old there lies a constant appeal, as to its Master and authoritative source. And if the New is the crown and completion of the Old, the Old is no less the basis and underwork of. The New. The weakening or destruction of the one involves the ultimate downfall of the other. The two, indeed, are not two; but indissolubly one. The New Testament will share in any discredit cast upon the Old, and will follow it to a fall; while the strength of the Old will be a fresh bulwark and permanent support of the New. There are signs as I cannot but think that the return of the tide has already set in, and that the next quarter of a century will witness a significant rehabilitation of the rights and authority of the books of the Old Testament, as religious and historical records second to none. This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. This book represents the only comprehensive attempt made thus far to survey all the efforts among Christians and Jews from New Testament times onward to translate the New Testament and the Christian liturgy into Hebrew. Whether the translators were intended to convert the Jews or to equip them with information necessary for the discussion of religion with Christians, they served to promote conversation and overcome divisions. The author's intimate knowledge of not only Biblical but also Michnaic and Modern Hebrew has enabled him to appreciate the various efforts at translation with acute sensitivity. Thus, the book is virtually a catalog of successes and failures in mutual understanding. More than the mere data of history, Hebrew in the Church is a penetrating contribution to the entire history of Jewish-Christian relations. It sheds fresh light on history itself, and it suggests important implications for anyone concerned with the exegesis of the New Testament. This unprecedented volume should receive the serious attention not only of specialists, but of all who work for a new understanding between Christians and Jews.
