Excerpt from The Modern Man's Religion Through the aid of generous friends, it was possible to arrange for the addresses now included in this volume. Neither the addresses themselves nor the topics with which they deal were arranged for without careful thought and without a definite purpose in view. From both teachers and students alike had come many requests for an opportunity to hear a new and fresh statement of some of the fundamental principles of religion. In the break-up of conventional ideas which has been so marked a characteristic of the generation in which we live, many intelligent men and women have lost the clue to the meaning of religion and to its significance for human life. They have been led hither and yon by strange and often superficial teachings which frequently confused without enlightening. Excerpt from The Modern Man's Religion It has been the good fortune of Columbia University to be a pioneer in many fields. It has had the courage and the foresight to ad vance on to new ground when advance was needed and to stand fast by old principles when steadfastness was required. In setting aside a portion of the academic day in order that teachers and students may assemble to listen to these addresses on religious prin ciples and religious truth, the Dean and Faculty of Teachers College have performed a new and not inconsiderable service. The claim has been made that the Bible is in every part the infallible word of God; that these words are His words as truly as though He had spoken them with his own mouth or written them with His own hand; that His having dictated them to inspired men is what gives them their authority. This view is untenable, as any one can see who reads the Bible without evading the facts.-from "Chapter IV: The Authority of the Bible"Lucid, reasonable, and humane, this is an interpretation of modern Christian theology-by a renowned thinker on religion-that is compassionate, sensible, and insightful. Eschewing absolutes and recognizing the need for thoughtful scrutiny and the allowance for human imperfection, this 1906 deconstruction of Christian belief, though a century old, remains highly readable, a source for believers and the doubtful alike to turn to for a new understanding of the faith that continues to drive our society today.OF INTEREST TO: Christian scholars, readers of religious philosophy, seekers after wisdomAmerican clergyman and educator Charles Reynolds Brown (1862-1950) was Dean of the Yale Divinity School from 1911 to 1928. He also wrote The Social Message of the Modern Pulpit (1906), The Strange Ways of God (1908), and The Modern Man's Religion (1911).

Saints, their places, the rituals of their veneration - the heroes and martyrs they represent or to whom they are often connected with - and the beliefs in their powers have often been described as being counter-thematic to the constructive issues of modern society in our times. However, in the Middle East - and certainly this is true for many other world regions and other world religions - local saints, Jewish, Christian and Islamic, have gained a very ambiguous status in religious movements, political struggles and events of social re-construction. In the case of Islam, perhaps more openly, modernists and fundamentalists alike attempt to abolish or to re-formulate the agenda of venerating the saints. However, at the same time saints and their localities have become a sort of overcharged symbolic incidence in the modern presence of Islam, in politics, in the media and - perhaps on a more hidden ground - in the struggle of ideas. In this volume historians, islamologists, anthropologists and sociologists give a multiple description of the inherent issues of the unhampered continuity of Muslim saints and their significance. With this volume 5, the Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam is linking empirical research on individual saints (including cases from Egypt, Turkey, Algeria, Syria and Morocco) with the debates around Islam and modernity. Georg Stauth teaches Sociology at the University of Bielefeld, Germany, and has widely published on Islam and Theory of Modernity.

From the Founding Fathers through the present, Christianity has exercised powerful influence in the United States—from its role in shaping politics and social institutions to its hand in inspiring art and culture. The Encyclopedia of Christianity in the United States outlines the myriad roles Christianity has played and continues to play. This masterful five-volume reference work includes biographies of major figures in the Christian church in the United States, influential religious documents and Supreme Court decisions, and information on theology and theologians, denominations, faith-based organizations, immigration, art—from decorative arts and film to music and literature—evangelism and crusades, the significant role of women, racial issues, civil religion, and more. The first volume opens with introductory essays that provide snapshots of Christianity in the U.S. from pre-colonial times to the present, as well as a statistical profile and a timeline of key dates and events. Entries are organized from A to Z. The final volume closes with essays exploring impressions of Christianity in the United States from other faiths and other parts of the world, as well as a select yet comprehensive bibliography. Appendices help readers locate entries by thematic section and author, and a comprehensive index further aids navigation.

This book explores the courtship and marriage of Gwyneth Murray, an English woman, and a Canadian, Harry Logan, who wrote in the personae of their vagina (Dardanella) and penis (Peter) during World War I. Through an analysis of their extensive daily correspondence over nearly a decade, it uncovers the couple’s changing attitudes to the intersection of sexuality and religion, to marriage and childrearing, as they navigated the transition from Victorian to modern values. By focusing on first-person narratives, this book enriches our understanding of gender identities revealing how porous the boundaries remained between notions of 'heterosexual' and 'same-sex' friendships. This study offers an unprecedented perspective on one couple’s sexual practices, which included mutual masturbation and oral sex, and constitutes one of the most intensive examinations of female attitudes to sexual pleasure in an era of female emancipation.
