In the sleepy Mexican town of Guanajuato, with its neatly kept square and elegant neoclassical theater, is one of the most bizarre and compelling galleries in the Western world. It is not a museum, for this gallery is in a cemetery; its walls lined not with art but with human mummies, standing with mouths agape, eye sockets staring as if they had just returned from the other side of Hell. Indeed, they have literally returned from the grave--exhumed from the dry, desert soil by cemetery keepers because relatives of the dead were too poor to pay for maintenance. So fascinating are these "living dead" that noted author Ray Bradbury wrote a chilling short story after seeing them: so visually arresting that photographer Archie Lieberman was moved to quell his horror and create a pictorial record. The two artists' reactions comprise this unusual book. The photographs call up the deepest and most provocative human emotions. They will shock, disturb and terrify. But they compel viewing; they stimulate confrontation and, believe it or not, will be examined again and again. The story, like all Bradbury's writing, quivers with tension and evokes the thoughts and feelings that reside mostly on the dark side of the mind--stuff of nightmares. No one who experiences this book will ever forget it.

Perfect for school and public libraries, this is the only reference book to combine pop culture with science to uncover the mystery behind mummies and the mummification phenomena. Mortality and death have always fascinated humankind. Civilizations from all over the world have practiced mummification as a means of preserving life after death—a ritual which captures the imagination of scientists, artists, and laypeople alike. This comprehensive encyclopedia focuses on all aspects of mummies: their ancient and modern history; their scientific study; their occurrence around the world; the religious and cultural beliefs surrounding them; and their roles in literary and cinematic entertainment. Author and horror guru Matt Cardin brings together 130 original articles written by an international roster of leading scientists and scholars to examine the art, science, and religious rituals of mummification throughout history. Through a combination of factual articles and topical essays, this book reviews cultural beliefs about death; the afterlife; and the interment, entombment, and cremation of human corpses in places like Egypt, Europe, Asia, and Central and South America. Additionally, the book covers the phenomenon of natural mummification where environmental conditions result in the spontaneous preservation of human and animal remains.

Over tens of thousands of years, the living have found different ways to take care of the dead. Some bodies are buried. Others are burned. Perhaps the creepiest method of all is turning the dead into mummies—preserving them so they almost look as if they were still alive. Are the tales of magic and curses that surround some mummies’ lairs really true? Among the 11 stories in this book, readers will discover mummies in a 7,000‐year‐old burial ground in South America; naturally‐preserved bog bodies in Northern Europe; and the mummy of an American outlaw that was displayed at carnivals and haunted houses in the 1900s. Fascinating details about burial rituals, human sacrifice, and ancient cultures are sure to enthrall readers.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explain the determinants of the degree of visit satisfaction to the Guanajuato Mummies Museum. The study contributes to the literature related to perceptions and attitudes of museum visitors, by identifying what factors explain the satisfaction with the visit; as to the best of our knowledge, no similar investigation has been carried out yet. Methods: A survey was used to collect the data (n=392) from national and foreign visitors of the said museum, containing sociodemographic variables, opinions and feelings of the visitors and information about the visit. Data analysis was conducted with an ordered Logit model. Results: Findings indicate that opinions about the activity of the museum, the guided tour and the rest area are the most significant determinants of visitors' satisfaction, while the library and facilities for the disabled are moderately important. Feelings of enjoyment, tiredness or boredom marginally affect visitors' satisfaction. Implications: Knowledge of the satisfaction factors can guide marketing strategies and direct the training of personnel as recommended by ICOM (International Council of Museums) to continue contributing to the improvement of services offered, increasing the levels of satisfaction, and leading to repeat visits.

The Mummy On Screen written by Basil Glynn and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-28 with History categories.

The Mummy is one of the most recognizable figures in horror and is as established in the popular imagination as virtually any other monster, yet the Mummy on screen has until now remained a largely overlooked figure in critical analysis of the cinema. In this compelling new study, Basil Glynn explores the history of the Mummy film, uncovering lost and half-forgotten movies along the way, revealing the cinematic Mummy to be an astonishingly diverse and protean figure with a myriad of on-screen incarnations. In the course of investigating the enduring appeal of this most 'Oriental' of monsters, Glynn traces the Mummy's development on screen from its roots in popular culture and silent cinema, through Universal Studios' Mummy movies of the 1930s and 40s, to Hammer Horror's re-imagining of the figure in the 1950s, and beyond.
