This volume featuring the collection of the Musee Fabre spans three centuries and includes works by 55 of the greatest French painters including Nicolas Poussin, Jaques-Louis David, Eugene Delacroix, Edgar Degas, Alfred Sisley, Frederic Bazille, and Gustav Courbet. An exceptional array of iconic paintings covers all artistic movements from 1600 to 1900, including Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionism. The painters represented worked in every genre, from portraiture, religious and mythological subjects, and landscapes to still lifes. The volume provides a comprehensive overview of French art, following its evolution from the highly sophisticated and classical art of Poussin in the early 17th century to the complete rethinking of painting by Courbet at the threshold of Impressionism in the second half of the 19th century. Michel Hilaire is director of the Musee Fabre, Montpellier. Jorg Zutter is assistant director, head of international art at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Olivier Zeder is deputy director of the Muse Fabre. 02 Gustave Courbet’s 1854 painting The Meeting (also known as Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet!) depicts his greatest patron, Alfred Bruyas (1821-1877), welcoming the artist to his hometown of Montpellier, in the south of France. As one of the foremost collectors of contemporary art in France, Bruyas’s tastes ranged from romanticism to realism, and he collected both traditional and what was then avant-garde art. This beautifully illustrated book features ninety-four works from Bruyas’s celebrated collection, including nine masterpieces by Courbet as well as important paintings, drawings, and sculptures by such leading French artists of the period as Delacroix, Ingres, Géricault, Millet, Corot, Rousseau, and Barye. The accompanying texts examine Bruyas’s role as one of the few mid-nineteenth-century private collectors of contemporary art and the significance of his patronage of living artists as well as the well-known but little-scrutinized relationship between Bruyas and Courbet. Cultivating the Muse looks beyond the secure and benign images traditionally associated with inspiration in classical literature and scholarship. In contrast to the shapeless collectivity of the Muses in ancient accounts, this collection aspires to redeem their shape in other more vitalforms, closer or more distant incarnations of the ever-elusive maiden. Protagonists -- or victims -- in a complex game of cultural exploration, the alternative Muses and muse-like figures of this book are manipulated, abused, or effaced, but at the same time they also advocate or resist their fatesand explore their own powers of persuasion. Inspiration is here not so much explored in its traditional cultic dimensions, but rather invoked for its capacity to trigger fervent debates about power, desire, knowledge, identity, and gender in the societies of ancient Greece and Rome.
