Words About Music written by John Amis and has been published by Marlowe this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Music categories.

Words About Music is an enchanting, lively, and delightfully varied anthology of writings about music - musicians, music critics, music-lovers, music-haters, musical performances, musical instruments, and musical history - by over five hundred celebrated figures, including George Gershwin, P.J. Wodehouse, Lenin, Richard Wagner, and George Sand. The selections of anecdotes, prose, poetry, criticism, letters, and memoirs gathered here range from a few lines to a few pages and are linked irregularly by entertaining informal comments and explanatory asides from the editors. Compiled by Michael Rose, editor of The New Grove, and John Amis of the BBC, this treasury of writings takes us from the hilarious and outrageous to the metaphysical and deeply moving, from the beloved and familiar to the unexpected and wonderfully surprising. Here is Madame Bovary's unforgettable night at the opera, Shaw's pleading with the authorities at Covent Garden to protect him from a woman who wore on her head "the pitiable corpse of a large white bird" - her hat; Nietzche's complaint that listening to Wagner annoys his feet, upsets his stomach, saddens his bowels, and inflames his throat; Rossini's observation, "How wonderful opera would be if there were no singers"; and Franklin Roosevelt's confession, "It got to the point where I had to get a haircut or a violin." A wonderfully idiosyncratic, unique collection, Words About Music never ceases to delight. As the Observer has praised, "Words About Music is enormous fun. Amis and Rose have a fine selective eye for wit and wisdom."

In Dan Zanes' House Party!, the Grammy Award-winning children's artist presents a huge collection of folk songs along with inspiration to start your own family band. Too often, new parents eager to share their love of music with their young children feel their options are limited to cuddly singing dinosaurs and well-meaning humans whose understanding of children’s music starts with “Kumbaya” and ends with “Puff the Magic Dragon.” For many sane adults, these choices are more abrasive than the most aggro noise-rock of their college years. Dan Zanes has spent the past 20 years creating a truly compelling body of children's music that music-loving parents can also get behind. A former 1980s indie rocker, Zanes' 13 children's albums have gained wide praise for their authentic arrangements and preservation of America's folk traditions. In Dan Zanes' House Party!, the Grammy Award–winning Zanes has curated a rich selection of folk songs that comprise an essential musical cross-section of the American experience and its multicultural, immigrant underpinnings. The selections include the standard songs we all know and love, along with folk classics. Each song is accompanied by a brief narrative on its historical context, followed by lyrics, notation, and chords. Among the songs you'll learn to play: "Erie Canal," "Pay Me My Money Down," "Titanic," "Waltzing Matilda," "The Farmer Is the One," "Wabash Cannonball," "Sloop John B.," "Old Joe Clark," "Skip to My Lou," "King Kong Kitchie," and "We Shall Not Be Moved." Dan Zanes' House Party! also includes informational sidebars throughout to give families the basics needed to pick up instruments and learn to more fully enjoy music as a family band. And in the back of the book, you'll find chord charts for guitar, ukele, and mandolin. More than just a collection of songs, Dan Zanes’ House Party! is part music book, part history lesson, and a work that all families can enjoy—together.

Christopher Hartley is the chair of the English department at the North Campus of Garden State Universitya place he refers to as a minimum intellectual facility. Recently returned from a medical leave begun after the death of his wife, Holly, sixteen months earlier, he is seeking some measure of peace. As Chris prepares a brand-new course called Music in Literature, he hopes the combination of the two disciplinesa pairing that has always fascinated himwill help him overcome his grief and deal with the estrangement of his daughter, Ivy. Peace, however, is as elusive as music itself. As he deals with his own health problems and the possibility of a new relationship with a much younger colleague, Chris moves through a chaotic and occasionally amusing fugue in which lust, love, self-worth, redemption, and meaning interweave. This complex novel explores how music and literature aid one man as he deals with grief, considers the meaning of life and death, and struggles to come to terms with his own mortality.

The Beautiful Music All Around Us written by Stephen Wade and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-10 with Music categories.

The Beautiful Music All Around Us presents the extraordinarily rich backstories of thirteen performances captured on Library of Congress field recordings between 1934 and 1942 in locations reaching from Southern Appalachia to the Mississippi Delta and the Great Plains. Including the children's play song "Shortenin' Bread," the fiddle tune "Bonaparte's Retreat," the blues "Another Man Done Gone," and the spiritual "Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down," these performances were recorded in kitchens and churches, on porches and in prisons, in hotel rooms and school auditoriums. Documented during the golden age of the Library of Congress recordings, they capture not only the words and tunes of traditional songs but also the sounds of life in which the performances were embedded: children laugh, neighbors comment, trucks pass by. Musician and researcher Stephen Wade sought out the performers on these recordings, their families, fellow musicians, and others who remembered them. He reconstructs the sights and sounds of the recording sessions themselves and how the music worked in all their lives. Some of these performers developed musical reputations beyond these field recordings, but for many, these tracks represent their only appearances on record: prisoners at the Arkansas State Penitentiary jumping on "the Library's recording machine" in a rendering of "Rock Island Line"; Ora Dell Graham being called away from the schoolyard to sing the jump-rope rhyme "Pullin' the Skiff"; Luther Strong shaking off a hungover night in jail and borrowing a fiddle to rip into "Glory in the Meetinghouse." Alongside loving and expert profiles of these performers and their locales and communities, Wade also untangles the histories of these iconic songs and tunes, tracing them through slave songs and spirituals, British and homegrown ballads, fiddle contests, gospel quartets, and labor laments. By exploring how these singers and instrumentalists exerted their own creativity on inherited forms, "amplifying tradition's gifts," Wade shows how a single artist can make a difference within a democracy. Reflecting decades of research and detective work, the profiles and abundant photos in The Beautiful Music All Around Us bring to life largely unheralded individuals--domestics, farm laborers, state prisoners, schoolchildren, cowboys, housewives and mothers, loggers and miners--whose music has become part of the wider American musical soundscape. The hardcover edition also includes an accompanying CD that presents these thirteen performances, songs and sounds of America in the 1930s and '40s.
