Excerpt from The Music of Bohemia It is the aim of this sketch to set forth the comparatively unfamiliar facts of the musical life of the Czechoslovaks, that people who for so long lived submerged, or, as the old Czech proverb has it, "mixed in the same bag with Germans and Hungarians." The various terms, Bohemian, Czech, Slovak, Czechoslovak, used in this book would probably puzzle an American reader if not defined; thus, to save the long historical and geographical explanations, we may be thoroughly assured by the fact that all these different names mean one nation only, that of the most western branch of the Slavic race in Europe. "Czech" is the Slav name for the Slav people and language in Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. The terms used to designate the whole country, the state, are "Bohemia" and "Bohemian." But she does not forget the old love, or old friends. Thaddeus visits her. They are interrupted by the Count, who is furious at finding the low-bom lover with his daughter. She calmly replies to her father's menaces, and avows her unchangeable attach ment to Thaddeus. The latter, at this, explains to the Count that he is of high rank, like him self, being one of the unfortunate Polish noble men, who had been obliged to leave their native land, and that he had assumed gipsy life and habits for safety. This explanation pleases every one but the Gipsy Queen, who is a listener. She orders a gipsy to shoot Thaddeus, but the weapon of death is turned aside by Devilshoof. Excerpt from The Bohemian Girl Meanwhile, Florestein and certain of the sportsmen dash excitedly across the grounds of the Castle, looking for Arline, who has been attacked by a stag. Thaddeus, getting hold of a rifle, hurries away after them, finds Arline, and frees her from danger by slaying the stag. The Count, overcome with gratitude for the safe return of his child, invites her deliverer and his companion, Devilshoof, to an approach ing banquet at the Castle. The invitation is accepted, and when the banquet comes off, the company are startled by Thaddeus defiantly refusing to drink the Emperor's health. He is about to be dealt with by the soldiers when Devilshoof intervenes on his behalf. Then the Gipsy chief, for his daring, is himself arrested and confined to the chateau, while Thaddeus, at Arnheim's earnest entreaty, is allowed to go free. The banquet is resumed, but is soon interrupted again by the escape of Devilshoof, who is seen by the terrified company bearing away in his arms the little Arline.
