Music Performance And The Realities Of Film written by Ben Winters and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-05 with Art categories.

This book examines the relationship between narrative film and reality, as seen through the lens of on-screen classical concert performance. By investigating these scenes, wherein the performance of music is foregrounded in the narrative, Winters uncovers how concert performance reflexively articulates music's importance to the ontology of film. The book asserts that narrative film of a variety of aesthetic approaches and traditions is no mere copy of everyday reality, but constitutes its own filmic reality, and that the music heard in a film's underscore plays an important role in distinguishing film reality from the everyday. As a result, concert scenes are examined as sites for provocative interactions between these two realities, in which real-world musicians appear in fictional narratives, and an audience’s suspension of disbelief is problematised. In blurring the musical experiences of onscreen observers and participants, these concert scenes also allegorize music’s role in creating a shared subjectivity between film audience and character, and prompt Winters to propose a radically new vision of music’s role in narrative cinema wherein musical underscore becomes part of a shared audio-visual space that may be just as accessible to the characters as the music they encounter in scenes of concert performance.

Reeled In Pre Existing Music In Narrative Film written by Jonathan Godsall and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-12 with Music categories.

How and why is pre-existing music used in films? What effects can its use have on films and their audiences? And what lasting impact can appropriation have on the music? Reeled In is a comprehensive exploration of these questions, considering the cinematic quotation of Beethoven symphonies, Beatles songs, and Herrmann scores alike in films ranging from the early sound era to the present day, and in every role from ‘main title theme’ to ‘music playing in bar’. Incorporating a discussion of such factors as copyright and commerce alongside examination of texts and their effects, this broad study is a significant contribution to the scholarship on music in screen media, demonstrating that pre-existing music possesses unique attributes that can affect both how filmmakers construct their works and how audiences receive them, to an extent regardless of the music’s style, genre, and so on. This book also situates the reception of music by film, and by audiences experiencing that music through film, as significant processes within present-day culture, while more generally providing an illuminating case study of the kinds of borrowings, adaptations, and reinventions that characterize much of today’s art and entertainment.

Sound Design Is The New Score written by Danijela Kulezic-Wilson and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-02 with Music categories.

The practice of blurring the line between score and sound design has transformed contemporary film soundscape by challenging not only the long-established hierarchical relationships between dialogue, music, and sound effects, but also the modes of perception shaped by classical soundtrack practices. The methods of this new trend rely on the language of contemporary popular and art music, producing soundtracks in which it is difficult to tell the difference between score and ambient sound, where pieces of electroacoustic music are merged with diegetic sound, sound effects are absorbed into the score or treated as music, and diegetic sound is treated as musique concrète. In Sound Design is the New Score, Kulezic-Wilson explores theoretical, aesthetic, and sensuous dimensions of this new trend, providing a multifaceted portrait of a practice which recognizes the interconnectedness of all soundtrack elements and emphasizes their inherent musicality. The aesthetic concerns of this practice are illuminated through the concept of the aesthetics of reticence which rejects classical narrative and scoring conventions and uses integrated soundtrack strategies to create the space for mystery in art and for individuality in the cinematic experience. The book's emphasis on sensuous and musical aspects of this practice, informed by the feminist discourse on the erotics of art, challenges popular notions about sensory cinema, demonstrating that the sensuousness of film form and its soundscapes is more sophisticated than simply being the result of excessive sensory stimulation facilitated by the use of digital technology or the "intensified" aesthetics it inspires. The discussion is supported by a wide range of case studies from American Independent, Asian, Australian, and European cinemas, including films by Shane Carruth, Claire Denis, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Harmony Korine, David Michôd, Gus Van Sant, and Peter Strickland.

"[Book title] explores two major areas of interest. First, [author] examines the historical, social, and critical contexts of the debates between music advocates and the music establishment over the uses of serious music in cinema. Next, he elaborates a model for understanding the relationship of film to film music: as film-musical counterpoint, expressed in the Soviet cinematic avant-garde, and as an essential programmatic component to the narrative film."--Page 4 of cover.

By exploring the relationship between music and the moving image in film narrative, David Neumeyer shows that film music is not conceptually separate from sound or dialogue, but that all three are manipulated and continually interact in the larger acoustical world of the sound track. In a medium in which the image has traditionally trumped sound, Neumeyer turns our attention to the voice as the mechanism through which narrative (dialog, speech) and sound (sound effects, music) come together. Complemented by music examples, illustrations, and contributions by James Buhler, Meaning and Interpretation of Music in Cinema is the capstone of Neumeyer's 25-year project in the analysis and interpretation of music in film.

Music in narrative film has historically been understood as performing a mood-setting or underscoring function. In this study, I challenge this restrictive notion and take an intermedial approach to film, positing that music is an important contributor to narrative communication. My investigation makes this argument through an investigation of narrative voice in film adaptations of literary texts, exploring in particular the translation of voice and structure across medial boundaries. More specifically, this dissertation investigates the relationship of music's meaning- and narrative-shaping function to narrative voice in East German film adaptations. The social and political realities of the socialist East German state-a context in which expressive language was externally censored-creates a unique framework within which to explore questions of narration and voice. This dissertation argues that the great aural complexity and experimentation in DEFA cinema exploits music's subtle extra-linguistic qualities to introduce semantic complexity and to address controversial topics. Each chapter in the study considers a different aspect of subjective literary narration and focuses on music's role in translating the narrative voice across medial boundaries. The introduction contextualizes the questions that drive this dissertation against the backdrop of previous scholarship on film music, literary adaptations, and the Deutsche Filmaktiengesellschaft, or DEFA, the East German state-run film production company. It also establishes the multidisciplinary approach of this study, highlighting its relevance to scholarship in fields as diverse as film studies, musicology, narratology, East German Studies, and gender studies. The following three chapters present case studies on pairs of adaptations. Chapter One examines Konrad Wolf's Goya (1971) and Heiner Carow's Die Legende von Paul und Paula (1973), focusing on the use of music and sound to create character subjectivity in the filmic medium by placing particular emphasis on the use of mediated music (Miceli) to create an inner subjective world belonging to a specific character or characters. Chapter Two explores unique deployments of music and sound to enact and represent the silencing subjective gendered voices in Konrad Wolf's Der geteilte Himmel (1964) and Frank Beyer's Der Verdacht (1991). Each film manages the relationship of a subjective female voice to a collective voice largely coded as male. Chapter Three focuses on the use of multi-voiced musical melodies in Frank Beyer's Jakob der Lugner (1974) and Lothar Warnecke's Unser kurzes Leben (1981) to translate complex, multi-voiced narration from novel to film. An epilogue examines some of the afterlives of the films and texts in this study to suggest some implications of this study beyond DEFA and Literaturverfilmungen.
