This is the only authoritative text of this late novel. It reproduces the manuscript which Mark Twain wrote last, and the only one he finished or called the "The Mysterious Stranger." Albert Bigelow Paine's edition of the same name has been shown to be a textual fraud.

The Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain The Mysterious Stranger is the final novel attempted by the American author Mark Twain. He worked on it periodically from 1897 through 1908. The body of work is a serious social commentary by Twain addressing his ideas of the Moral Sense and the "damned human race." Twain wrote multiple versions of the story; each is unfinished and involves the character of "Satan." "St. Petersburg Fragment" Twain wrote the "St. Petersburg Fragment" in September 1897. It was set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, a name Twain often used for Hannibal, Missouri. The Chronicle of Young Satan The first substantial version is commonly referred to as The Chronicle of Young Satan and relates the adventures of Satan, the sinless nephew of the biblical Satan, in Eseldorf, an Austrian village in the Middle Ages (year 1702). The story ends abruptly in the middle of a scene involving Satan' entertaining a prince in India. Twain wrote this version between November 1897 and September 1900. "Eseldorf" is German for "assville" or "donkeytown." Schoolhouse Hill The second substantial version Twain attempted to write is known as Schoolhouse Hill. It is set in the US and involves the familiar characters Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer and their adventures with Satan, referred to in this version as "No. 44, New Series 864962." Schoolhouse Hill is the shortest of the three versions. Twain began writing it in November 1898 and, like the "St. Petersburg Fragment," set it in the fictional town of St. Petersburg.

The Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain.... The Mysterious Stranger is a novel attempted by the American author Mark Twain. He worked on it intermittently from 1897 through 1908. Twain wrote multiple versions of the story; each involves a supernatural character called "Satan" or "No. 44." All the versions remained unfinished (with the debatable exception of the last one, No. 44, the Mysterious Stranger). In 1590, three boys, Theodor, Seppi and Nikolaus, live relatively happy simple lives in a remote Austrian village called Eseldorf (German for "Assville" or "Donkeytown"). The story is narrated by Theodor, the village organist's son. Other local characters include Father Peter, his niece Marget, and the astrologer. One day, a handsome teenage boy named Satan appears in the village. He explains that he is an angel and the nephew of the fallen angel whose name he shares. Young Satan performs several magical feats. He claims to be able to foresee the future and informs the group of unfortunate events that will soon befall those they care about. The boys don't believe Satan's claims until one of his predictions comes true. Satan proceeds to describe further tragedies that will befall their friends. The boys beg Satan to intercede. Satan agrees, but operates under the technical definition of mercy. For instance, instead of a lingering death due to illness, Satan simply causes one of Theodor's friends to die immediately.

"The Mysterious Stranger" is a novel by Mark Twain, though it was left unfinished at the time of his death in 1910 and published posthumously in various versions. It's one of Twain's darker and more philosophical works, exploring themes of morality, human nature, and the nature of existence. The story is set in medieval Austria and follows the experiences of a young boy named August Feldner who encounters a mysterious stranger named Satan. This enigmatic figure, who goes by various names throughout the story, possesses supernatural powers and challenges August's perceptions of reality, morality, and the nature of good and evil. Throughout the narrative, the mysterious stranger exposes the hypocrisy and cruelty of human society, while also demonstrating the arbitrary and capricious nature of fate. The story is marked by its bleak outlook on human existence and its exploration of existential themes, including the meaninglessness of life and the absence of divine justice. "The Mysterious Stranger" is considered one of Twain's most ambitious and experimental works, though its unfinished nature has led to multiple versions and interpretations over the years. Despite its darkness, the novel offers a thought-provoking exploration of fundamental questions about the human condition and the nature of reality.
