Shades Of Authority written by Stephen James and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

What is the relationship between poetry and power? Should poetry be considered a mode of authority or an impotent medium? And why is it that the modern poets most commonly regarded as authoritative are precisely those whose works wrestle with a sense of artistic inadequacy? Such questions lie at the heart of this study, prompting fresh insights into three of the most important poets of recent decades: Robert Lowell, Geoffrey Hill and Seamus Heaney. Through attentive close reading and the tracing of dominant motifs in each writer’s works, James shows how their responsiveness to matters of political and cultural import lends weight to the idea of poetry as authoritative utterance, as a medium for speaking of and to the world in a persuasive, memorable manner. And yet, as James demonstrates, each poet is exercised by an awareness of his own cultural marginality, even by a sense of the limitations and liabilities of language itself.

Does Christianity Cause War written by David Martin and has been published by Regent College Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Social Science categories.

This bold work challenges two popular conceptions of religion--as either the instigator of conflict or the propagator of peace. Martin, one of the world's leading sociologists of religion, rejects both as oversimplifications, and draws on case studies from Britain, the US, Latin American, and Romania to argue for a more nuanced, complex approach that takes account of the role of national and ethnic identity.

God S Spies Michelangelo Shakespeare And Other Poets Of Vision written by Paul Murray OP and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-21 with Religion categories.

Written with both passion and precision, God's Spies is a work that will be welcomed by anyone interested in the vital interplay between poetry and religion. The authors represented, including poets such as Michelangelo, St Francis of Assisi, Charles Péguy, Dante and Shakespeare, all possess one great and surprising quality in common: audacity. All of them in their work offer fresh and unforeseen perspectives on life and literature. Some of these authors are religious in the strict meaning of the word, their work indicating a devout turning away from the distractions of the world to focus on God. Others, in contrast, are poets whose work is distinguished by a remarkable visionary focus on the many small and great dramas of life, attending with bright, imaginative genius to what Shakespeare calls 'the mystery of things'.

The Poetry Of Geoffrey Hill written by Henry Hart and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986 with Literary Criticism categories.

The development of Geoffrey Hill's verse over 30years is like the topography of his homeground in the West Midlands of England. There are hills and valleys but no wholly unexpected shifts of contour. Henry Hart has completed the first comprehensive mapping of this new poetic landscape and finds Hill a deeply traditional poet capable of writing in a variety of forms, but also one who used his superior skills to debate tradition. Hart begins the discussion of Hill's work with selections written during his Oxford days in the early 1950s. The poet's themes of passion, crisis, and the struggle toward perception and control were then finding their early focus in the quest for intense vision and right judgment. The post-Oxford works--Forthe Un-fallen, King Log, Mercian Hymns, and Tenebrae--alongwith Hill's most recent poem, The Mystery of the Charity of Charles Peguy, all display verbal power, skill with forms, and sensuously and metaphysically informed intelligence.
