A New History Of Medieval Japanese Theatre written by Noel John Pinnington and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-21 with Performing Arts categories.

This book traces the history of noh and kyōgen, the first major Japanese theatrical arts. Going beyond P. G. O'Neill's Early Nō Drama of 1958, it covers the full period of noh's medieval development and includes a chapter dedicated to the comic art of kyōgen, which has often been left in noh's shadow. It is based on contemporary research in Japan, Asia, Europe and America, and embraces current ideas of theatre history, providing a richly contextualized account which looks closely at theatrical forms and genres as they arose. The masked drama of noh, with its ghosts, chanting and music, and its use in Japanese films, has been the object of modern international interest. However, audiences are often confused as to what noh actually is. This book attempts to answer where noh came from, what it was like in its day, and what it was for. To that end, it contains sections which discuss a number of prominent noh plays in their period and challenges established approaches. It also contains the first detailed study in English of the kyōgen repertoire of the sixteenth-century.

The authors offer a detailed examination and explanation of Noh, the first great Japanese theatrical form. The spirit is at the essence of Noh, as Kannami Kiyotsugu created the form in the late-fourteenth century by combining elements from Japanese theater with Zen Buddhism. The authors present the history, explain the nuances, and even provide samples of these Noh plays.

This title was first published in 1988: In this book the author has translated five postwar experimental Japanese plays and recreated the artistic, social and spiritual milieu in which they were created. He describes the turning point in Japanese thinking about the nature and limitations of a Western-oriented modern culture, and the creation of "underground" theatres which in which evolved a new mythology of history. Professor Goodman sees these developments as an interplay between personal and political (ie revolutionary) salvation.

This book explores the myth, so abused by the mass media, that the Japanese are a grey, anonymous mass of efficient, obedient workers. The articles shed light on a Japan outside officialdom, a lively Japan of tumultuous and independent thought, inefficient and aesthetic, pleasure-loving, aggressive and wasteful, creative and anti-authoritarian. The book's truly international contributors examine the role in modern Japanese society of a range of leisure and play activities, from drinking to travel, football to karaoke, tattoos to rock fandom. They explore how things which seem like play in one context are deadly serious in another, and how the fun and enjoyment may be achieved in unexpected ways. They also draw attention to the importance of such activities in understanding the deeper structure and meaning pervading all areas of the society in which they take place. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of Japanese Studies, Sociology, Anthropology and Cultural Studies.

Arthur Waley (1889-1966) was an influential English orientalist and sinologist who brought countless Eastern texts to English audiences. Associated with the Bloomsbury group, Waley came to prominence with the help of modernist poet Ezra Pound, who helped him find readership in influential literary magazines. In this groundbreaking collection of translations, Waley gives us his skilled renderings of "The N Plays of Japan." A traditional form of Japanese theater, N drama has origins in the 14th century. With its particular strictures of style and content, N drama is recognizable for is simplistic beauty, use of gesture, and masked actors. The subject matter of the plays is broad-often times combining the physical with the spiritual, the dramas tend to be imbued with a striking philosophical and spiritual atmosphere. Waley includes an insightful introduction into the art form prior to his thoughtful verse/prose translations of the plays. This collection is a perfect text for curious minds and scholars alike.

How do classical, highly codified theatre arts retain the interest of today's audiences and how do they grow and respond to their changing circumstances? The eight essays presented here examine the contemporary relevance and significance of the "classic" No and Kyogen theatre to Japan and the West. They explore the theatrical experience from many perspectives--those of theatre, music, dance, art, literature, linguistics, philosophy, religion, history and sociology.
