Excerpt from The Natural History of South Africa, Vol. 3 of 4: Including the Hartebeests, Wildebeests, Duikers, Steenboks, Waterbucks, Reedbucks, Impala, Springbuck, Gemsbok, Bushbuks, Kudu, Eland, Cape Buffalo, Giraffe, Hippopotamus, Bosch Vark, Quagga, Zebras, Rhinoceros, Klip Dassie, and African Elephant Only two species inhabit Africa south of the Zambesi and Cunene Rivers, viz. The Cape or Red Hartebeest and Lichtenstein's Hartebeest. The former is confined to Africa south of the Limpopo River, but the latter, which inhabits the north eastern portion oi South Africa, ranges into Central Africa. The Dutch Voortrekkers gave the name of Harte beest to this antelope from a fancied resemblance to a hart or stag, an animal which in point of size and colour it somewhat resembles. Excerpt from The South African Journal of Natural History, Vol. 3: Being the Official Organ of the South African Biological Society With Which Is Incorporated the Journal of the South African Ornithologists' Union; March, 1922 Grey-backed Wagtail - M. Longicauda Riipp.: This most delicately hued species was first detected in our area by Rickard, who secured one on the Buffalo River, presumably at East London, on 3rd January, Sharpe refers also to another early record of one shot by Mr. F. A. Barrett near kingvvilliams town. At present resident pairs of this scarce species occur/ here and there along the streams emerging from the forest, and at the extreme south of our area a pair has occasionally been seen by Mr. Wood in the Park at East London. These birds love a stretch of river where shallow water ows over flat rocks, and, chosen their quarters, they do not wander far f easily found a second time. As they trip along, tails in perpetual motion, they add to the fores scribable charm which is enhanced when they mount ud among over-reaching trees and Hit fairy-like among the branches.' Unlike the Cape wagtail, this species never - as far as my experience goes - leaves the river side, but there it displays the same confiding habits as its congeners. One has come within three yards of rile as I rested on the rocks in the bed of the Pirie river, and it utterid a note suggestive of a chicken's plaintive call.
