The Naturalist on the River Amazons Volume 1 By Henry Bates One of the most interesting excursions made by Mr. Bates from Para was the ascent of the river Tocantins--the mouth of which lies about 4-5 miles from the city of Para. This was twice attempted. On the second occasion--our author being in company with Mr. Wallace--the travellers penetrated as far as the rapids of Arroyos, about 130 miles from its mouth. This district is one of the chief collecting-grounds of the well-known Brazil-nut (Bertholletia excelsa), which is here very plentiful, grove after grove of these splendid trees being visible, towering above their fellows, with the "woody fruits, large and round as cannon-balls, dotted over the branches." The Naturalist on the River Amazons, subtitled A Record of the Adventures, Habits of Animals, Sketches of Brazilian and Indian Life, and Aspects of Nature under the Equator, during Eleven Years of Travel, is an 1863 book by the British naturalist Henry Walter Bates about his expedition to the Amazon basin. Bates and his friend Alfred Russel Wallace set out to obtain new species and new evidence for evolution by natural selection, as well as exotic specimens to sell. He explored thousands of miles of the Amazon and its tributaries, and collected over 14,000 species, of which 8,000 were new to science. His observations of the coloration of butterflies led him to discover Batesian mimicry. The book contains an evenly distributed mixture of natural history, travel, and observation of human societies, including the towns with their Catholic processions. Only the most remarkable discoveries of animals and plants are described, and theories such as evolution and mimicry are barely mentioned. Bates remarks that finding a new species is only the start; he also describes animal behaviour, sometimes in detail, as for the army ants. He constantly relates the wildlife to the people, explaining how the people hunt, what they eat and what they use as medicines. The book is illustrated with drawings by leading artists including E. W. Robinson, Josiah Wood Whymper, Joseph Wolf and Johann Baptist Zwecker. On Bates's return to England, he was encouraged by Charles Darwin to write up his eleven-year stay in the Amazon as a book. The result was widely admired, not least by Darwin; other reviewers sometimes disagreed with the book's support for evolution, but generally enjoyed his account of the journey, scenery, people, and natural history. The book has been reprinted many times, mostly in Bates's own effective abridgement for the second edition, which omitted the more technical descriptions. the best book of Natural History Travels ever published in England — Charles Darwin

Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892) was a British naturalist and explorer with a keen interest in entomology. In fact, his interest in insects was so encompassing that in 1844 Bates inspired equal enthusiasm in his new colleague and friend, Alfred Russel Wallace. Four years later, Bates and Wallace embarked on an extended expedition to South America to explore and collect insect specimens for museums and private collectors back in England. The two naturalists traveled the Amazon rainforest together for about two years, and then struck off to different regions to pursue their own interests. Bates remained in South America longer than Wallace - a full 11 years - before returning to England in 1859. Back home, Bates reflected on his insect collections, and developed the first scientific account of mimicry in animals. Mimicry has since become a standard paradigm in biological thought, and concrete evidence for the theory of evolution by natural selection. Not surprisingly, it was Charles Darwin, himself, who encouraged Bates to publish "The Naturalist on the River Amazons." The sumptuous depictions of his travels in South America provide an intriguing insight into both the perspective and aspirations of this man and his time. "The Naturalist on the River Amazons" was originally published as two volumes in 1863; however, only one year later, Bates published a much abridged second edition in a single volume that, unfortunately, has become the standard version in today's marketplace. Now, Briar Bird Press is offering a return to the original two volume set. Volume 2 of "The Naturalist on the River Amazons" is the fourth entry in the Foundations in Biological Thought series; volume I is available as Foundations in Biological Thought, no. 3. The series presents the pivotal works of 19th century naturalists remastered for modern readers. Meticulously edited, these volumes preserve the author's intent in design and content, including the manuscript's original annotations and amendments. In addition, revised page references and editor's notes are included throughout to retain the utility of the works for both study and reference.
