Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Philosophy - Miscellaneous, grade: B+, language: English, abstract: The primary purpose of this essay is to deconstruct the negative conception of philosophy, providing insight into its nature not only as an aspect of the general human (intellectual) endeavor to acquire self-knowledge, but also to make the philosophical enterprise accessible not only to students making a fresh contact with the discipline or the Universities but also the lay persons who are interested in self-understanding, liberation and critical evaluation of the perennial ideas of human existence. This essay uses the two principal tools of philosophy namely; language and Logic to deploy philosophical expertise and mastery for everyday existential value. Through the language tool, the student and lay readers of philosophy are capacitated with a good command of language of communication to achieve clarity of thought, analysis of ideas and cognitive advantage over nature. The Logic tool on the other hand adds to human capacity the means of proving valid or invalid arguments through the general principles and techniques of good reasoning to the communication or articulation of ideas via the use of symbols. Using these tools, philosophy enlightens humanity, encourages open mindedness and broadens our sensibilities and sensitivity to the ideas of tolerance cooperation and compassion among others. It is here assumed that, knowledge of philosophy will generate and grow our conceptual and theoretical framework for perceiving, feeling, evaluating and transforming reality in our everyday lived lives.

This book addresses one of the most ancestral themes of philosophy which is equally one of the questions most profoundly rooted in man, the question of God and of his existence. And since this question concerns both philosophy and religion, it is immediately accompanied by another question regarding the relationship between faith and reason: what can philosophical reason tell us about the existence of God? To what extent is it capable of providing knowledge of God and his nature? What use of reason is at stake here? More fundamentally still, must reason recognize its limit and create room for faith (and what kind of faith is it, then—rational or irrational)? or can it, on the contrary, claim to be able to reach an adequate knowledge of God, a knowledge capable of fully assuming its absoluteness? To address these essential questions, Benjamin Ezulike focuses on two giants of philosophical thought, Kant and Hegel....Whoever reads the present work will find a clear, rigorous and, above all, strictly honest presentation of the way in which Kant and Hegel, in their respective thoughts, conceived and interpreted the question of God and his existence, a question that no philosophy worthy of the name can afford to ignore without failing to meet the radicalism that is emblematic of the philosophical enterprise. Plato is one of the most influential philosophers of all time. He decisively shaped the profile and canon of western philosophy. Criticism of what has become known as Platonism has been continuously nourished by the difficulties of interpreting this philosopher's writings. Plato is commonly viewed as a purely rational philosopher. A philosopher he was indeed, but Plato was also an expert in approaching the non-rational, in the form of mythology among others. Plato has been called a "mythmaker" and a "mythologist". Plato was a visionary who dared to explore the realm of the non-rational in a systematic and disciplined way. In an overall comparison, Plato's philosophical enterprise strives for a comprehensive perspective on the organic whole. The expression "Gestalt" seems to come closest to describing the wholeness. Plato may be considered to be the most prominent representative of classical philosophy to develop a Gestalt philosophy and also the last to do so in antiquity.

What If written by Nicholas Rescher and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-06 with Philosophy categories.

Thought experimentation has been a staple of philosophical methodology since classical antiquity, when Xenophanes of Colophon speculated that if horses had gods, they would be equine in form. Nicholas Rescher's What If? undertakes a systematic survey of the role and utility of thought experiments in philosophy. After surveying the historical issues, Rescher examines the principles involved, and explains the conditions under which thought experimentation can validly yield instructive results in philosophy. The reader gains understanding of the differences between scientific and philosophical experiments. What If? begins by examining the nature of thought experiments. It presents an overview of how thought experiments have figured in natural science and in historical studies, before moving on to examine how they function as an instrument of philosophical inquiry. After examining thought experiments from the pre-Socratics to the present day, Rescher turns from history to analysis, and examines the modes of reasoning involved in the use of speculative hypotheses in philosophical problem solving. He shows the limitations of speculative ontology, showing that thought experimentation can lead readily to paradox in a way that increasingly diminishes its usefulness. The book concludes by arguing and illustrating how and when it becomes pointless to push speculation, or thought experimentation beyond the limits of intelligibility and cogent sense. Among the principal features of Rescher's book is its elaborate analysis of the appropriate conditions for philosophical thought experimentation. Its cardinal thesis is that there indeed are limits to the appropriateness of this important methodological resource and that transgressing these limits destroys the prospect of drawing any valid lessons for the philosophical enterprise. What If? will be of interest to philosophers, students of philosophy, and theorists of logic and reasoning.
