This reissue is the first complete printed reproduction of what was the most influential maritime publication of its day. The subjects covered range from accounts of battles and lists of ships to notices of promotions and marriages, courts martial and deaths, and biographies, poetry and letters. Each volume also contains engravings and charts relating to naval engagements and important harbours around the world. Volume 1 (1799) contains English and French accounts of the Battle of the Nile and the Glorious First of June. Technical papers include discussions of an improved pump capstan, ship stability, and the Indian monsoon. There are topographical descriptions of Brest and Southampton, a report on the American navy, and biographies of Admirals Earl Howe, Lord Rodney and Viscount Bridport.
