The light revealed a vaulted cellar, some twelve feet square, with floor of hard clay, and walls of massive stone. The arching roof was built of substantial masses of brick. Opposite the foot of the stairway was a small door, fashioned in the walls, evidently the entrance of a secret passage. As the torch flashed over this door, Leon examined it with a careful eye.
