A method for testing engine coolants using static vehicles is described. Tests were conducted with engines idling at the speed equivalent to 97 kph (60 mph) with an operating cycle of 16 h on and 8 h off for 161 000 simulated service kilometres (100 000 miles). The initial antifreeze coolant concentration was 45 percent with ASTM corrosive water for approximately 8000 simulated kilometres (5000 miles) in order to duplicate the original coolant fill condition at the vehicle assembly plant and allow sufficient period for film forming inhibitors to react with the internal multimetal surfaces. The initial coolant concentration was then cut in half to simulate a depleted coolant condition and accelerate the corrosion activity in the engine cooling system.

Development Of An Accelerated Corrosion Test For Screening Antifreeze Compounds written by James H. Conley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982 with categories.

The objective of this study was to develop an accelerated laboratory corrosion test for screening all antifreeze compounds, eliminating the need to conduct the costly and time-consuming simulated service test. The results of this phase of research indicate that this new accelerated bench corrosion test may replace the simulated service test. (Author).

Use Of Electrochemical Techniques For Corrosion Testing Of Antifreezes written by ST. Hirozawa and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1980 with Antifreeze solutions categories.

Two electrochemical techniques were used for corrosion testing of antifreezes. The first method, the galvanic test procedure, evaluates corrosion in galvanic bimetallic couples commonly found in automotive cooling systems. It identifies the anode (major corroding metal) in the couple, gives useful corrosion rates in as little as 24 h, and can generate corrosion rates as a function of time. Thus, more detailed data can be obtained more rapidly than with the standard glassware corrosion test, which gives only a weight loss measurement after two weeks of testing. Test results were compared for a number of antifreezes obtained with this electrochemical method and with ASTM Corrosion Test for Engine Coolants in Glassware (D 1384-70) and ASTM Simulated Service Corrosion Testing of Engine Coolants (D 2570-73). These results show good correlation between the methods but also point out some areas where the electrochemical method can give misleading data.

The ASTM Simulated Service Corrison Testing of Engine Coolants (D 2570-73) was developed to evaluate coolant performance. The method has been plagued by lack of adequate reproducibility which is making the credibility of the method questionable. Several interlaboratory tests and reproducibility studies have been conducted, but no significant progress has been made to improve the reproducibility. A questionnaire was sent to ASTM Committee D15 on Engine Coolants for an opinion of the overall value of the method. Most agree that this test is excellent for development and screening, but its use as a qualifying tool is limited due to the lack of reproducibility. A statistical analysis was performed on the interlaboratory data to obtain the quantitative estimates of reproducibility and repeatability as follows: Y ± 140/60 percent and Y ± 60 percent, respectively, where Y is the value of the corrosion weight losses. These results show that reproducibility is not adequate enough to use the method as a qualifying tool, and repeatability is in a range where it can be used effectively for development, but there is room for improvement of the repeatability also.
