The world’s wildlife is in crisis, and the next ten years are critical. The New Big 5 brings together more than 145 of the world’s greatest wildlife photographers, conservationists, and advocates in a mission to not only celebrate the natural beauty of the animal world, but to raise awareness of the crucial issues facing these magnificent creatures. Until recently, the Big Five referred to the five big-game animals that were most difficult for colonial hunters to shoot and kill. Wildlife photographer Graeme Green’s The New Big 5 Project set about to reclaim that gruesome, antiquated term by asking people around the world to vote on the five endangered animals they would most want to shoot—with a camera. More than fifty thousand people voted, and the New Big 5 list of Wildlife Photography was born. What are the New Big 5? Elephants Gorillas Tigers Lions Polar Bears With 226 stunning photos and informative essays from the world’s greatest wildlife advocates, this one-of-a-kind book inspires and raises awareness about the New Big 5, and our wildlife world. FEATURES MANY OTHER ENDANGERED SPECIES: An extensive chapter is devoted to endangered species, such as rhinos, cheetahs, lemurs, frogs, vultures, sharks, whales, and turtles. INCREDIBLE CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY: Majestic portraits, animals in their habitat, and examples of natural behavior from more than 145 renowned wildlife photographers, including Ami Vitale, Marsel van Oosten, Paul Nicklen, Steve McCurry, Karine Aigner, Brian Skerry, Lucas Bustamante, Beverly Joubert, Clement Kiragu, Thomas Mangelsen, Paul Hilton, Suzi Eszterhas, Sascha Fonseca, Cristina Mittermeier, Frans Lanting, Marina Cano, Gael R. Vande Weghe, Daisy Gilardini, Steve Winter, Qiang Zhang, Art Wolfe, Dhritiman Mukherjee, Will Burrard-Lucas, David Lloyd, Vicki Jauron, Sergey Gorshkov, and Thomas Vijayan. ENGAGING ESSAYS from leading conservationists, including Dr. Jane Goodall, Dr. Paula Kahumbu (Wildlife Direct), Dr. Tara Stoinski (CEO, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund), Krista Wright (Executive Director, Polar Bears International), Dr. Anish Andheria (CEO, Wildlife Conservation Trust), Dr. Moreangels Mbizah (Executive Director, Wildlife Conservation Action), Dominique Gonçalves (Manager, Elephant Ecology Project at Gorongosa National Park), and Wes Sechrest (CEO, Re:wild). “I hope the photos in this The New Big 5 book will lead people into the wonderful worlds of these iconic species - elephants, polar bears, gorillas, tigers and lions - and encourage them to explore the lives of so many other fascinating creatures, many of which are also endangered. Then, perhaps, other people will become involved in helping to create a world where wildlife can flourish for future generations to enjoy. I believe we have a window of time during which we can start to heal some of the harm we have inflicted on the natural world and slow down the heating of the planet. But only if we get together and take action now.” - Dr. Jane Goodall

The story of Penang would be incomplete without the Big Five Hokkien families (the Khoo, the Cheah, the Yeoh, the Lim, and the Tan). It was the Big Five who played a preponderant role not only in transforming Penang into a regional entrepot and a business and financial base, but also in reconfiguring maritime trading patterns and the business orientation of the region in the nineteenth century. Departing from the colonial vantage point, this book examines a web of transnational, hybrid and fluid networks of the Big Five comprising of family relationship, sworn brotherhood, political alliance and business partnerships, which linked Penang and its surrounding states (western Malay states, southwestern Siam, southern Burma, and the north and eastern coasts of Sumatra) together to form one economically unified geographical region, having inextricable links to China and India. With these intertwining networks, the Big Five succeeded in establishing their dominance in all the major enterprises (trade, shipping, cash crop planting, tin mining, opium revenue farms), which constituted the linchpin of Penang’s and its region’s economy. By disentangling and dissecting this intricate web of networks, this book reveals the rise and decline of the Hokkien mercantile families’ nearly century-long economic ascendancy in Penang and its region. "Wong Yee Tuan’s study of the five clans of Penang represents a major breakthrough in the study of the Malayan Chinese. He documents an extremely important aspect of the nineteenth-century Asian diaspora, exposing the intricate links between families, businesses, secret societies, revenue farms and public life of some of the key groups of Chinese in Penang and northern Malaya. The book weaves together the various strands of overseas Chinese life not only in Malaya, but also in the Netherlands Indies, Siam and China. Most importantly, it shows the process by which the Chinese leaders gained political, economic and social power as well as the way by which these powers were lost." -- Carl A. Trocki, Emeritus Professor, Asian Studies, Queensland University of Technology, Australia "This volume can be situated within a growing historiographical current whereby regional studies of connections, networks and interactions are gradually transcending national histories. Incorporating commercial, ethnic and social elements, the history presented can be concurrently seen as a business case study, a sociological exploration, a political economy treatise and an inquiry into Hokkien networking. Wong Yee Tuan is to be congratulated on this signal study in how local, national and broader regional histories can be integrated." -- Geoffrey Wade, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University "By aligning family, socio-political and business interests, the leading Penang Hokkien clans centralized their 'home port' as a hub of regional commercial networks, thus successfully extending the trading colonies of Chinese diaspora westward to the edge of the Indian Ocean. Wong has fastidiously researched and compellingly proven this, with a clear eye for relevant cross-cultural collaborations with indigenous and international actors. The important legacy of the 'Big Five' clanhouses is now firmly embedded in the George Town World Heritage Site, inciting further inquiry into the cultural formation of collective entrepreneurship in Southeast Asia." -- Khoo Salma Nasution, Heritage Advocate and Local Historian, Penang

This book also focuses on analyzing each trait from the point of view of its higher and lower order structure, as well as from the affective, cognitive, behavioral, social and academic perspectives, apart from outlining the field of personality psychology. Personality traits are important in daily interaction, and are a significant factor in achieving educational goals also for second and foreign language (L2) learners. Consequently, studying the role of personality in the field of second language acquisition (SLA) appears to be of primary importance, especially because there has been little research on this subject. Moreover, general results pertaining to the role of personality in L2 are inconclusive. This book’s primary objective is to present a concise and updated picture of personality on the basis of the Big Five model, which is accessible for non-psychologists. The middle part of the book focuses on discussing potential merits and drawbacks of each trait for the purpose of the process of SLA, both from the formal and informal, theoretical and empirical points of view. The next part includes a description of an empirical study, whose main aim is to sensitize the reader to direct and indirect influences that personality may exert on L2 learning. The book closes with a concluding chapter aiming at clarifying directions for further empirical study of personality as well as issues in research methodology.

Olivia Wallace has a birthday curse . . . or so she thinks. It was a broken heart on her 16th, a car accident on her 21st, pneumonia on her 30th, and a fall down a flight of stairs on her 35th. There were Ohio blizzards on her 38th, 39th, and 40th; and six days before her 45th, she lost the love of her life to a heart attack. Numbing grief stole that birthday and a couple more to follow and, on the morning of her 48th birthday, she received the call she'd dreaded ever since losing her mom so many years ago . . . she was diagnosed with stage-3 ovarian cancer. The doctors didn't hold out a lot of hope, but Liv survived and maintained her faith. Months of surgeries and chemotherapy and radiation treatments followed. But now, as her 50th birthday creeps up the icy Ohio path toward her, her hair has grown back, her energy level is up, and she is officially cancer free. It makes her nervous. After everything she's gone through, Liv hates the idea of driving on icy roads and returning to work as an O.R. nurse in a local Cincinnati hospital. Her best friend Hallie knows just the thing to break Liv out of the winter doldrums, while providing a safe haven of warmth, sunshine, and a time to regroup: a holiday in the Florida sunshine!
