In Czechoslovakia, in the 1960s, artists began to realize that the aesthetics of social realism contrasted with the realities of daily life; a movement of film arose in response to the politics and history of the nation. This work collects candid interviews with the creators of the Czech New Wave film movement (1960-2000). Their work put Czech film on the map of world cinema, generating two Oscars for Best Foreign Film, but the official critique marked them as decadent, pessimistic, and reactionary. The work contains sixteen uncensored interviews with filmmakers such as Jan Nemec, Jiri Menzel, Saša Gedeon, and Jan Sverak, who describe the struggle to realize their visions in a constantly shifting political landscape: from the mid-1960s, through the repressive "normalization" after the Soviet occupation in 1968 (more films were banned in 1970 than during the previous twenty years of Communism), and after the Velvet Revolution of 1989. The interviews give portraits of some of the most talented figures in film, revealing artists searching for individual and national identity, who describe living and making film in the Czech Republic now and in the past, explore how foreign films influence Czech film, and speculate on the future of film. Each interview includes a short biography, filmography, and list of awards. The work is bookended by essays giving background on the political and economic situations leading up to and after the Velvet Revolution.

The cultural liberalization of communist Czechoslovakia in the 1960s produced many artistic accomplishments, not least the celebrated films of the Czech New Wave. This movement saw filmmakers use their new freedom to engage with traditions of the avant-garde, especially Surrealism. This book explores the avant-garde's influence over the New Wave and considers the political implications of that influence. The close analysis of selected films, ranging from the Oscar-winning Closely Observed Trains to the aesthetically challenging Daisies, is contextualized by an account of the Czech avant-garde and a discussion of the films' immediate cultural and political background.

This book is the first study in English to examine some of the key themes and traditions of Czech and Slovak cinema, linking inter-war and post-war cinemas together with developments in the post-Communist period. It examines links between theme, genre, and visual style, and looks at the ways in which a range of styles and traditions has extended across different historical periods and political regimes. Czech and Slovak Cinema provides a unique study of areas of Central European film history that have not previously been examined in English.

While histories of Czech cinema often highlight the quality of Czechoslovak New Wave films made in the 1960s, post-socialist Czech cinema receives little attention. Through a methodology of historical reception, Stories between Tears and Laughter explores how attitudes towards post-socialist Czech cinema have shifted from viewing it as radical “art cinema” and more towards popular cinema. By analyzing publicity materials, reviews, and articles, Richard Vojvoda offers a new perspective on the notions of cultural value and quality that have been shaping the history of post-socialist Czech cinema.

The Cinema Of The Prague Spring written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Art and society categories.

The Prague Spring of 1968 was a revolution fought in the name of personal freedom, against oppressive political forces. As the social, cultural and economic politics of the Cold War stretched through the Eastern Bloc the citizens of its satellite states became more feverish in their defiance of an oppressive Soviet system. As revolution began in Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union responded promptly and violently. To analyze the relationship between the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia in 1968 is to explore the unjust truth of politics, a collection of oppressive systems in which those who are powerful crush those who are not. One system gains control, as one is oppressed in every way possible. In uncovering the nature of Prague Spring politics I closely analyze revolutionary movements within Czechoslovakia that directly confronted oppressive politics: the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Women's Union, which promoted feminist ideology and expressed hope for the dissolution of the culture of oppressive political thinking built by the Soviet Union, and the Czech New Wave, a group of revolutionary film makers that attempted to inspire action and reform within Czechoslovakian society. The Czech New Wave was Czechoslovakia's most defiant arena of creative revolt. The satirical films of the Czech New Wave outline a specific aesthetic of response to cultural turmoil. The artists of the New Wave endured oppression and censorship during the upheaval of the Prague Spring, foundationally altering the visual and contextual aesthetics of the genre. In this investigation, I meticulously and compassionately analyze Věra Chytilová's Daisies (1966) and Jiří Menzel, Věra Chytilová, Jaromil Jireš, Jan Němec and Evald Schorm's collaborative epic Pearls of the Deep (1966) as a means of exploring these concepts. Czechoslovakian revolutionary film embodies one central question -- what does it mean to be politically and creatively free? In this investigation of the ways in which systematic and unjust politics aid creative response, I reveal the deep assimilation in every literal and theoretical corner of radical politics into the consciousness of, the production of, human culture and creativity.
