Excerpt from The New McGuffey: Fifth Reader The Elocutionary Introduction, by Professor F. Townsend Southwick, presents in brief scope the most important rules for oral reading and those principles of the art that are most necessary for the pupils to master. The teacher should, at the very outset, become thoroughly familiar with the subjects here presented, and the pupils should be referred to this discussion of elocutionary principles as often as occasion may permit. The more difficult words are defined, and their pronunciation is indicated by diacritical marks. The object of this is to aid the pupil in the ready preparation of the reading lesson, and not to supply merely an exercise in the study of words. Short explanatory notes are given wherever required for a full understanding of the text. It is assumed, however, that the pupils have already a general knowledge of most of the subjects alluded to, or that they have ready access to the more common books of reference, and therefore only occasional notes of this character are necessary. An alphabetical list of the authors of the various selections, together with brief biographical and critical notes, is given as an appendix to the volume. Acknowledgments are due to Messrs. Little, Brown Co., Charles Scribner's Sons, the Century Company, and other publishers who have generously permitted the use, in this series, of selections from their copyrighted works. The selections from Longfellow, Hawthorne, Larcom, Emerson, Holmes, and Whittier are used by special arrangement with and permission of Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin & Co., the authorized publishers of the works of these authors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Fifth Reader The purpose of this book, the fifth and last of the series, is twofold first, to afford the pupil of limited opportunities the advantage of that which is best in American and English literature; second, to furnish a line of reading to the literary student, which is as valuable as a stepping-stone to the masterpieces as it is because of its intrinsic worth. The spirit and plan of the New Era Series of readers is to give the children proper incen tives to become habitual readers of standard writings, and this volume is sent out with the hope that it may receive the same favorable consideration as a means toward that end, that has been accorded to the preceding books. The matter used is largely new. A few of the selections usually found in a book of this grade are repeated here because their value in school work warrants this recognition. A number of the more recent authors are introduced. In no case, however, has this been done unless their literary standing is entirely established. Excerpt from New National Fifth Reader With The publication of this book, our series of readers designed for the use of graded and ungraded schools, is completed. Concerning the simplicity and careful gradation of the letter-press, a word of explanation is necessary. It is evident, even to the casual observer, that pupils terminate their school life at a much earlier age now than over before. This is due, in part, to - 1. - Better methods of instruction, which advance pupils more rapidly toward the completion of their course of study. 2. - Afeverish desire on the part of the young to commence their life-work. 3. - The humble circumstances of many parents, who, consequently, need the assistance of their children in the every-day affairs of life, and take them from school by the time they have finished the third reader. Excerpt from Everyday Classics: Fifth Reader This series of Readers has been prepared in the belief that the instruction in reading in the schools should be based on a selection of the classics of our literature. The child is introduced not only to what is excellent in itself but to what his father and mother have read before him, to what has become a valued part of the heritage of the nation and the race. All other school reading should be supplementary to this study of what is best in literature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The New Century Fifth Reader: Selected and Adapted From the World's Standard Literature When pupils and teacher have reached this point in their study together, success depends wholly on mutual interest. Unless the teacher is deeply interested in the work, and makes thorough preparation for it, the pupils can not be expected to be interested; and even when the teacher is interested and interesting, the pupils must be left largely to their own ambition to seize the opportunity and do the work which will in the end bring such rich rewards. Nothing in after life will afford so much satis faction as a familiarity, on terms of equality, with the greatest thoughts of the greatest writers.
