Of Russian, French, and later American nationality, Stravinsky's musical styles are startlingly diverse, reflecting his life and era; from Tsarist Russia, to 1920s France and post-war USA. His early years in Russia saw him launch his international career, with Dyagilve's Ballets Russes in Paris and the premieres of The Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring. Between 1920-1939 Stravinsky lived and worked in France, producing his great neo-classical compositions, reactivating the modes and manners of the eighteenth century. This stylistic inclination eventually gave way to a highly individual use of serial techniques in his last years, when he took up residence in the United States. This biography of Igor Stravinsky is one in a new series of composer biographies, derived and adapted from the second edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. These newly written biographies bring the best of the book-length pieces in The New Grove to a wider audience. Each title provides fresh new insights into the life and works of a major composer, derived from the most recent scholarship. In addition to a detailed and informative view of the subject's life and works, written by an expert in the field, each book includes comprehensive, tabular work-lists and a fully revised and updated bibliography.

Three seminal figures in 20th-century music are considered in this volume. First, the life and works of Bela Bartok, the Hungarian composer who drew deeply on the folklore of his homeland to bring a fresh vitality into 20th-century music, are treated by Laszlo Somfai and Vera Lampert, working with the resources of the Budapest Bartok Archive. Second, Igor Stravinsky, whose life--from his upbringing in prerevolutionary Russia, through the intellectual crucible that was the Paris of the 1920s, to his final years in Los Angeles and New York--is charted by Eric Walter White, while his works are tellingly set in context by Jeremy Noble. Third, Paul Hindemith, the craftsman/composer par excellence, is considered by Ian Kemp. Taken together, these articles brilliantly illuminate the forces bearing on Western music in the early to mid-20th century. Book jacket.

This German-born composer was quite possibly the most controversial musical figure of the 19th century. A great literary, philosophical, and political man as well as a musical talent, he pursued his artistic aims with ruthless determination in his public and private life as well as through his many critical and theoretical writings. His contribution to the development of the German Romantic opera included the training of a more dramatically powerful type of opera singer and the extension of thematic development. His life and works arouse passions like no other composer's and his works are hated as much as they are worshipped. The New Grove Wagner is a fascinating guide to this challenging, yet stimulating, composer. This 18th century Austrian was the son of a wheelwright whose love for music led him to ignore his parents' wish for him to enter holy orders and insstead to doggedly pursue a musical career. He rose over the years of his life from a talented choirboy who sang for his neighbors to one of the most significant composers of his time. Deeply involved in the evolution of the Classical style, its subsequent growth can be seen in his own music. Under his care the symphony and the string quartet came to life. The great oratorios and masses of his late years belong to the consummation of the classical spirit in music. The New Grove Haydn takes an in-depth look at this fascinating composer.About The New Grove II Composer Biography Series:These new, fully re-written editions of some of the most popular titles in the New Grove composer biography series last published in the 1980s build on the enormous success of those books, offering fresh new insights drawn from the most recent scholarship. A new look at one of the most important composers of the twentith century Stravinsky and His World brings together an international roster of scholars to explore fresh perspectives on the life and music of Igor Stravinsky. Situating Stravinsky in new intellectual and musical contexts, the essays in this volume shed valuable light on one of the most important composers of the twentieth century. Contributors examine Stravinsky's interaction with Spanish and Latin American modernism, rethink the stylistic label "neoclassicism" with a section on the ideological conflict over his lesser-known opera buffa Mavra, and reassess his connections to his homeland, paying special attention to Stravinsky's visit to the Soviet Union in 1962. The essays also explore Stravinsky's musical and religious differences with Arthur Lourié, delve into Stravinsky's collaboration with Pyotr Suvchinsky and Roland-Manuel in the genesis of his groundbreaking Poetics of Music, and look at how the movement within stasis evident in the scores of Stravinsky's Orpheus and Oedipus Rex reflected the composer's fierce belief in fate. Rare documents—including Spanish and Mexican interviews, Russian letters, articles by Arthur Lourié, and rarely seen French and Russian texts—supplement the volume, bringing to life Stravinsky's rich intellectual milieu and intense personal relationships. The contributors are Tatiana Baranova, Leon Botstein, Jonathan Cross, Valérie Dufour, Gretchen Horlacher, Tamara Levitz, Klára Móricz, Leonora Saavedra, and Svetlana Savenko.
