Due to growing concern about the competitiveness of industry in the international marketplace and the efficiency ofgovernment enterprises, widespread initiatives are currently underway to enhance thecompetitive posture offirms and to streamline government operations. Nearly all enterprises are engaged in assessing ways in which their productivity, product quality and operations can be improved. These efforts canbe described as Business Process Engineering (BPE). BPE had its roots in industry under differing titIes: Process Improvement, Process Simplification, Process Innovation, Reengineering, etc. It has matured to be an important ingredient of successful enterprises in the private and public sectors. After extensive exploitation by industrial and governmental practitioners and consultants, it is attracting increasing attention from academics in the fields of engineering and business. However, even with all of this attention in the popular literature, serious scholarly literature on BPE is in short supply. TItis is somewhat surprising, especially since so many large international organizations have attempted BPE projectswith varied success.

Design of Industrial Information Systems presents a body of knowledge applicable to many aspects of industrial and manufacturing systems. New software systems, such as Enterprise Resource Planning, and new hardware technologies, such as RFID, have made it possible to integrate what were separate IT databases and operations into one system to realize the greatest possible operational efficiencies. This text provides a background in, and an introduction to, the relevant information technologies and shows how they are used to model and implement integrated IT systems. With the growth of courses in information technology offered in industrial engineering and engineering management programs, the authors have written this book to show how such computer-based knowledge systems are designed and used in modern manufacturing and industrial companies. - Introduces Data Modeling and Functional Architecture Design, with a focus on integration for overall system design - Encompasses hands-on approach, employing many in-chapter exercises and end-of-chapter problem sets with case studies in manufacturing and service industries - Shows the reader how Information Systems can be integrated into a wider E-business/Web-Enabled Database business model - Offers applications in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)

Information Management The Organizational Dimension written by Michael J. Earl and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-03-28 with Computers categories.
This volume is a sequel to Information Management: The Strategic Dimension (OUP 1988), a book which was well received by managers and academics alike. In the last decade, the pervasiveness of information technology (IT) has brought about far-reaching changes in how many managers and specialists work and, indeed, in how we conceptualize the organization. The correspondence between new organizational terminology and the language of IT demonstrates this — networked, virtual and knowledge-based organizations, inter-organizational alliances, distributed organizations and groupware all being examples. For some, IT represents a solution to many organizational and operational problems (including the advocates of Business Process Re-engineering) and the most likely way to improve business performance and gain competitive advantage. At the same time, for many managers and organizations the reality is that the risks, costs, false trails and difficulties seem to outweigh any immediate tangible advantage. The purpose of this book is to take an informed, dispassionate and constructive look at the challenges of IT and to offer insight, analysis and guidance on the ever changing IT environment, focusing in particular on managerial and organizational issues. These include centralization versus decentralization, relations between users and specialists, managing the IS function, outsourcing versus internal capabilities, project management and systems implementation, and an assessment of Business Process Re-engineering at both the conceptual and empirical level. Section 1 looks at some of the organizational horizons made possible by information technology; the next section tackles some of the challenges that face organizations who want to exploit IT in innovative and strategic ways. Section 3 examines some of the eternal questions of how to organize the IS function. In Section Four the contributors look at various aspects of project management and systems implementation. The next section examines some contemporary management questions on the agendas of Chief Information officers and their IS departments. Michael Earl's postscript integrates the volume through the framework of 'organizational fit'. The book provides an authoritative overview and helpful diagnostics of current information management challenges by some of the leading information systems researchers in Europe and the USA. The volume will be essential reading for management students, consultants, and senior IT professionals. Advances In Enterprise Information Systems Ii written by Charles Moller and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-07 with Business & Economics categories.
For many years now Enterprise Information Systems have been critical in helping businesses successfully navigate the global market. The development that started with design and implementation of integrated systems has evolved to incorporate a multitude of perspectives and ideas. The Enterprise Information Systems functionality extends from principally an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system to a portfolio of standard systems including CRM (Customer Relationship Management) systems and SCM (Supply Chain Management) systems. Advances in Enterprise Information Systems II is divided into seven thematic sections, each exploring a distinct topic. In “Concepts in Enterprise Information Systems” the authors present new concepts and ideas for the field. “Cases in Enterprise Information Systems” introduces studies of enterprise information systems in an organizational context. “Business Process Management” is one of the major themes within enterprise information systems and “Designing Enterprise Information Systems” discusses new approaches to the design of processes and system and also deals with how design can be taken as a specific perspective. “Enterprise Information Systems in various domains” features generic studies that contribute to advancing the practical knowledge of the field as well as towards “Global issues of Enterprise Information Systems”. Finally, in “Emerging Topics in Enterprise Information Systems”, new technologies and ideas are explored. Cloud computing in particular seems to be setting the agenda for future research in enterprise information systems. The book will be invaluable to academics and professionals interested in recent developments in the field of enterprise information systems.
